Anisha Thai Hong Kong Top Dancer Mixies Academy dance school Afro classes

Anisha Thai – From Civil Engineer to one of Hong Kong’s Top Dancers and Founder of The Mixies Academy

Anisha Thai is not just a dancer; she’s a vibrant force in Hong Kong’s arts scene. Known for her energy and passion, her journey to success has taken some surprising turns.

Growing up in Paris with Vietnamese, Comorian, and French roots, Anisha always dreamed of a life full of adventure. “It was important for me to move away and challenge the way I thought,” she says. This desire for cultural connection led her to dance, a universal language that breaks down barriers.

Anisha wanted to combine her love for business and art. “I’ve always wanted to be a successful business owner and an artist,” she explains. She studied civil engineering, hoping for a stable future. Despite excelling in her studies and working for major construction firms, she felt unfulfilled. “I pushed myself to excel in a field I wasn’t passionate about,” she admits.

Everything changed when she won a dance competition in Hong Kong, sparking a realisation: “After that competition, I knew I wanted to pursue dance as my true passion,” she shares. With that insight, Anisha made the bold choice to leave engineering behind.

Now, she’s the founder of The Mixies Academy, a dance school offering Afro dance classes for all ages and skill levels. Anisha’s academy focuses on creativity and expression, empowering students to find their groove. “Life, like dance, is meant to be shared with others. Helping them to grow helps you grow too,” she explains.

Her mission extends beyond teaching dance; Anisha aims to inspire others. “I want to encourage people to realise they can achieve whatever they want as long as they believe in themselves,” she says. She tells everyone, especially young women, to chase their dreams. “You can be African and Asian; you can be an engineer and a dancer; anything is possible,” she insists.

Anisha expresses herself through her art, too. “When I dance on the street, my expressions show that I’m enjoying myself, regardless of what others think,” she says. This authenticity sets her apart. “To succeed, you must keep that voice inside you going; you have to believe in yourself,” she adds.

Anisha’s journey is a bold manifesto for redefining success on your terms. With her infectious energy and presence on social media, she’s a trailblazer in Hong Kong’s creative scene. Her honesty about her path resonates with many, proving that embracing your true passions is both brave and fulfilling. She’s not just inspiring others to dance; she’s sparking a movement where joy and authenticity take center stage. In a city dominated by conventional careers, Anisha is a refreshing reminder that pursuing what you love can lead to extraordinary success.

From Concrete to Canopy: The Marries’ Journey to Urban Greenery

Charlene and Sophie Marrie are redefining entrepreneurship in Hong Kong with their vibrant journey through My Rooftop is Green (MRG). While Charlene once dreamed of being a film director and Sophie envisioned starting her own company, they now co-manage a landscaping business that has blossomed into a hub of creativity and sustainability. “Our dad shared stories about the ups and downs of owning a business, and that entrepreneurial spirit runs deep in our family,” Charlene explains.

The sisters took a bold step by purchasing MRG, diving into an industry they knew little about. After completing her marketing degree at the University of Leeds and a Master’s in film production at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Charlene joined Sophie, who had taken over the business after returning to Hong Kong during the pandemic. “It was a huge shift from film to landscaping, but I quickly learned to navigate the practical side of running a business,” Charlene notes.

For Sophie, who studied Information Management for Business at UCL, the journey began with a personal commitment to sustainability. “Witnessing environmental challenges sparked my passion for creating a business that makes a difference,” she says. With no prior knowledge of plants or design, she took the opportunity to transform MRG, learning hands-on, including enrolling in a landscape design course at HKUST. “The learning curve was steep, but every challenge was an opportunity to grow,” Sophie reflects.

Initially, it was just the two of them handling everything — gardening, deliveries, and marketing. “We even carried 20kg pots up staircases ourselves!” Charlene recalls. Their hard work paid off; MRG now boasts a team of six and is about to launch Botani Bloom, a French-inspired luxury plant brand designed to bring joy to compact urban living spaces. “We believe plants do more than beautify a space; they enrich lives,” Sophie explains.

Their approach to business is refreshingly modern, using digital marketing and social media to engage clients in ways traditional firms often overlook. “We want to create a community around plants, not just sell a service,” Charlene states. Their dynamic content aims to debunk common myths about plant care, showing that owning plants can be easy and fulfilling. “People often say, ‘I’m not a green thumb’ or ‘Plants attract mosquitoes,’” Charlene points out. “We’re here to show them that’s simply not true.”

Sustainability is at the heart of their mission. “Our business aligns with our values,” Sophie emphasises. “We source plants responsibly and design spaces that promote well-being in urban environments.” Their unique blend of French and Hong Kong influences enables them to connect with a diverse clientele, whether they’re expats yearning for a touch of home or locals seeking something distinctive.

Reflecting on their unconventional path, Sophie remarks, “In our circles, we’re among the few not pursuing traditional careers in finance or consulting.” Their journey sparks conversations about entrepreneurship in a landscape dominated by tech startups and e-commerce. “Most people are surprised when we tell them we own a landscaping business,” she adds.

The sisters’ commitment to their work transcends typical business hours. “Our friends often say, ‘You’re on holiday!’ but for us, it’s a different kind of dedication,” Charlene explains. “We’re always mentally available, and the flexibility of being our own bosses is liberating, but it comes with challenges.” With only five days a year where they can disconnect completely, they’ve learned to navigate the demands of entrepreneurship while remaining passionate about their craft.

As they continue to carve out their niche in the landscaping industry, Charlene and Sophie Marrie inspire others to pursue their passions, showing that it’s possible to create a thriving business that enriches lives, one green oasis at a time.

10x Longevity biohacking studio innovative health longevity treatments ageing hyperbaric oxygen therapy sauna cold plunge red light therapy healthspan

The Longevity Architect: Jill Van Vugt’s Biohacking Vision

Jill Van Vugt has taken an unconventional career path that reflects resilience and evolution. After graduating with degrees in Economics and Gender Studies, she began her career in Toronto in sales and communications. However, after two years without a clear vision, she pivoted to law, where she practiced litigation for nearly 15 years. This experience shaped her understanding of success, but moving to Hong Kong prompted her to reassess her career.

Relocating to Hong Kong ignited Jill’s entrepreneurial spirit. She felt countless opportunities lay before her, but then the pandemic hit, putting her ambitions on hold. Rather than seeing this as a setback, Jill embraced the time for reflection, refining her vision for what would become 10x Longevity, a biohacking studio that meets the growing demand for innovative health approaches. With the pandemic’s end, she was ready to create a space where cutting-edge longevity treatments could thrive.

Drawing from her legal background, especially her experience with clients who sustained serious injuries, Jill recognised the importance of physical rehabilitation and investing in long-term health. Witnessing remarkable recoveries inspired her to open a studio where people could take proactive steps toward maintaining and extending their health. Her belief that ageing is fundamentally about damage to our musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and neurological systems drives her mission at 10x Longevity. Here, she offers evidence-based tools like hyperbaric oxygen therapy, sauna, cold plunge, red light therapy, and specialised facials — all aimed at improving healthspan and skin performance as we age.

Jill’s journey highlights the importance of adaptability and vision in creating unconventional careers for women. She notes that while her path might not fit the typical corporate narrative, many lawyers eventually pivot to new opportunities informed by their experiences. “You have to be looking for a new opportunity to take the leap,” she advises, emphasising the need to stay open to change.

Her business style is marked by curiosity, flexibility, and decisiveness. Jill acknowledges she’s on a steep learning curve but embraces the challenge. “I try not to let fear hinder my decisions,” she says. “I’m very driven, but I also don’t take failure or mistakes too seriously. I learn from them and move on.”

Tina Shum – From Corporate Strategy to Founder of Raw Lily

Tina Shum, founder of Raw Lily, always had a drive to build something of her own. “When I was young, I always imagined starting something from the ground up that could have a positive impact,” she reflects. After working in customer growth and acquisition at Citibank, M&A strategy at PwC, and planning and growth at Klook, Tina found success in building new practices and advising clients. However, despite her corporate accomplishments, something felt incomplete.

“I realised I hadn’t yet fulfilled my desire to build something of my own,” Tina explains. Her awareness of her health prompted Tina to dive deeper into the products she was using, and she noticed a significant problem: “Many products, especially in wellness and skincare, were marketed as ‘safe’ but didn’t live up to those claims.” This lack of transparency inspired Tina to create Raw Lily, a brand where consumers can trust the safety and quality of the products without doing all the research themselves. Raw Lily’s Never Ever List™ reflects Tina’s commitment to ensuring harmful substances don’t make their way into the products offered.

Through Raw Lily, Tina has found a deeper purpose in offering products that prioritise people’s health and well-being. Her advice to aspiring entrepreneurs? “Trust yourself and don’t wait for everything to be perfect before starting. Let your passion guide you, and surround yourself with the right mentors.”

Feeling the pressure of constant hustle? You’re not alone. I recount my experience with burnout and how it reshaped my approach to work and life.

Unfortunately, many of us have been there – working ourselves to the brink, convinced that constant hustle is the only path to success. In a busy city like Hong Kong, the workaholic culture is all too real. This relentless pursuit of achievement, often glorified as a status symbol, leaves many of us grappling with burnout. But what if there’s another way? Discover my experience with burnout, the hard lessons I learned, and how we might all find a healthier, more balanced approach to work and life.

Hong Kong workaholic culture

The Workaholic Culture In Hong Kong

In 2022, Kisi conducted a study examining 100 cities to determine which ones offer the healthiest work-life balance, and the findings were alarming for Hong Kong. It ranked as the second most overworked city. This workaholic culture is often traced back to deep-seated conditioning, where success is equated with hard work. Our initial job experiences further cement these norms, making it hard to break away from the overwork mindset. Overworking, especially among middle and upper-class “knowledge workers”, is often romanticised as a status symbol of success. In addition, companies expect constant availability, perpetuating the overwork culture. For some, there’s even a performative aspect to this grind – showcasing new designer items, boasting about “dream jobs” or even flaunting exhaustion as a badge of honour.

Despite these pressures, there’s a growing recognition of the harmful effects of this culture, leading to a slow shift towards valuing balance and mental well-being. However, the transition isn’t smooth, and our work culture often results in severe burnout. Addressing the root causes of burnout is crucial as we push for a healthier work-life balance.

What Is Burnout?

Burnout is officially recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an occupational phenomenon, not a medical condition, stemming from chronic workplace stress that remains unmanaged. The symptoms include energy depletion, increased mental distance or cynicism towards one’s job, and reduced professional efficacy. It emphasises that burnout is linked to environmental stressors, not personal weakness. This perspective suggests that fixing the workplace is the primary solution to combating burnout.

But I beg to differ. Can we always fix our workplaces right away? Is this a realistic feat? While addressing workplace stressors is crucial, making these changes will take time. Structural and cultural issues can be deeply ingrained, making it difficult to initiate change quickly. In the meantime, we should equip ourselves with tools to manage stress and prioritise self-care.

my experience with burnout

The Breaking Point: When Everything Comes Crashing Down

My own encounter with burnout came unexpectedly and left me feeling utterly lost. At 25, after a career change and opening two businesses, I found myself exhausted from years of relentless work since the age of 15. As a perfectionist and over-achiever, my life appeared enviable on Instagram – full of coffee-fuelled productivity and jet-setting adventures. But behind the scenes, I was chronically stressed, battling anxiety and feeling depressed. My immune system was compromised, my digestion was a mess and I didn’t want to get out of bed. Socialising felt like a chore, and I began isolating myself from friends.

I ignored the signs of burnout for far too long, convincing myself that everyone else seemed to cope just fine. It wasn’t until my body reached its breaking point and I physically couldn’t get out of bed that I had to confront the reality of my situation. Burnout had taken a severe toll on my mind and body, and the fear of looking weak prevented me from seeking help. Looking back, I wish I had recognised the signs sooner and taken steps to prioritise my well-being before reaching such a critical point.

my burnout recovery

How I Recovered From Burnout

Eventually, I realised I needed to rebuild my social life and make genuine connections. It’s easy to withdraw when you’re feeling low, convinced you’re no fun to be around. But staying isolated only makes things worse. I forced myself to reach out and found that even small interactions helped lift my spirits. These days, I try to be kinder to myself, focusing on what I need rather than just what others expect of me. It’s a tough shift, especially when you’re conditioned to prioritise work and productivity over personal well-being, but it’s crucial for recovery.

One of the biggest lessons I learned was the importance of prioritising. Initially, it felt overwhelming to decide what truly mattered each day, but making a physical list of priorities helped. Each morning, I would review or edit my list to remind myself of the day’s focus. This practice was instrumental in my recovery. It taught me that not everything can be a priority at the same time, and that’s okay. Some days, my priority is work; other days, it’s self-care. Checking in with myself regularly helps me stay balanced and prevents me from falling back into old habits. Setting boundaries and learning to say no have also been essential. As a recovering people pleaser, this was difficult, but it’s better to be honest about your limits. Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey, but taking time to reflect on your needs can make a significant difference.

Lessons Learned From My Burnout Experience

Lessons Learned From My Burnout Experience

Burning out because of unrealistic expectations and constant judgment at work took a severe toll on my mental and physical well-being. Reflecting on my experience, I realised the importance of assessing whether these challenges were within my control or beyond my influence. I learned to stop reacting impulsively to every stressor and started to pick my battles, accepting that some situations were simply beyond my scope of influence. Embracing this mindset brought me true peace and wisdom. I also had to let go of the belief that I needed to work until I broke. Choosing happiness and taking full responsibility for it, while believing that life and work can be light and fun, was transformative. How might your world change if you dared to try this mindset? The results, as I found, could be truly life-changing. Will you dare to try it with me?

Got a wedding to attend and unsure about how much to gift the happy couple? Here’s how to determine how much money to give as a wedding cash gift.

Picture this: wedding season is upon us (or it never really seems to end) and you’ve got an invite in the mail from a friend or family member. It’s an excuse to get dressed up and celebrate a loved one but the world of wedding gifts can be hard to navigate. We’ve put together this handy guide — so you know exactly how much cash to give the newlyweds.

You’ve been invited to a wedding and you’re super excited to attend: your outfit (or outfits, plural!) is picked out and you’ve wrangled a plus-one to accompany you on the day. But now you’re faced with a dilemma — you’re expected to give a cash gift. Just how much money should you be giving to the happy couple? Too little and you’ll be seen as miserly, too much and you’ll end up inappropriate. Don’t sweat, here are the dos and don’ts of wedding gift etiquette when it comes to cash.

Please note, these are general recommendations and there are many factors that may affect how much cash you want to give to newlyweds. These could include: how close you are to the couple, how far you have to travel to the celebration (is it a destination wedding abroad?) and your own financial situation. You can always use our cultural tips as a rule of thumb and go from there!

How Much Money To Gift At A Chinese Wedding

Red envelopes aren’t just for Chinese New Year — they are also expected as gifts at Chinese weddings. Unlike Western weddings, gift registries are not common for Chinese weddings and cash is actually preferred, as the money goes towards paying for the wedding costs and helping the couple start their new life together.

The Chinese words for red envelopes (including “lai see”, “hong bao” and “ang pao”) also represent good fortune so there is an extra layer of meaning with your cash gift.

The amount of money you should put into the red envelope should be equal to the cost of the Chinese wedding banquet you will be attending. This could range from $1,000 to $2,000.

Again, factor in your relationship with the couple — if you’re a distant relative or friend, stick to the smaller end of the scale but if you are close to the couple, you may want to give more than $2,000.

In keeping with Chinese tradition, try to avoid any amounts that contain the number 4, as it is associated with death. Alternatively, try to incorporate the number 8 into the amount, as it is a lucky number in Chinese culture said to bring fortune.

How Much Money To Gift At An Indian Wedding

Just like Chinese weddings, it is customary for guests at Indian weddings to give cash or cheques inside a decorative envelope or embroidered bag. In Indian culture, stick to amounts that end in 1 (like $101, $201, $301 etc.) rather than round numbers, as they are more auspicious and signify that the couple is off on a new journey together.

There is no hard and fast rule for how much to give at an Indian wedding and it depends on how well you know the couple. Give as much as you can and as long as the amount ends in 1, your gift will be considered lucky and meaningful!

how much money cash gift guide present hong kong weddings 1 japanese

How Much Money To Gift At A Japanese Wedding

With Japanese weddings, things are a bit easier as there is a general set rule for cash gifts. Depending on whether you’re travelling to Japan for the wedding or attending the wedding of a Japanese couple elsewhere, you can pay in Yen or the equivalent amount in your currency. Whatever you do though, don’t give an amount that’s divisible by 2 because the number can be evenly split — and no one wants to talk about splitting up at a wedding!

Single people and colleagues attending a Japanese wedding tend to give ¥30,000 (around HK$1,600), while a boss or a married couple will usually give ¥50,000 (around HK$2,700). Close relatives might choose to give even more. Remember to put the money in a special envelope called a “shugi-bukoro” and you’ll be good to go.

how much money cash gift guide present hong kong weddings 1 korean

How Much Money To Gift At A Korean Wedding

The thing to keep in mind when giving cash to a Korean couple getting married is that it is reciprocal. This means that whatever amount you give them, they will end up “owing” you the same amount if you were to host a wedding that they are invited to. Striking the right balance is important, as giving too much can burden the couple with the expectation of returning the same amount.

Once again, how familiar you are with the couple comes into play. People will typically pay W30,000 (around HK$178) if they are single or a colleague, all the way up to W100,000 (around HK$593) if they are very close relatives or friends. Similar to Chinese weddings, you should try to give enough to cover the cost of the wedding meal you will be eating at the reception.

How Much Money To Gift At Other Asian Weddings

What about other Asian wedding cultures that we haven’t covered on the list? Not to worry — it’s pretty safe to assume that cash is the preferred gifting option at most Asian ceremonies, including Thai, Indonesian and Filipino weddings. So, don’t be afraid to bring an envelope of cash with you on the big day as they will be happily received by the bride and groom.

How Much Money To Gift At European Weddings

Cash gifts are also a part of many European wedding cultures. In Italy, the bride carries a satin bag (called “la borsa”) that guests can push cash into. In France, wedding guests can contribute money into a “pot commun”, or a communal pot.

In Spain, couples even put their bank account details onto the invitation so guests can directly transfer money to them without even needing to bring cash! Money is also a popular option for German and Polish weddings.

How Much Money To Gift At North American And British Weddings

While North American and British weddings generally have a gift registry that guests can purchase items from, giving money is becoming an increasingly popular option as well. Some couples even opt for a cash registry instead of a traditional one.

In fact, there are plenty of videos on social media of couples having a PayPal code for guests to scan and contribute by the entrance — talk about modern convenience! Some couples may ask for contributions towards a down payment on a house or for their honeymoon, so cash can be a good option if you don’t want to deal with picking out and buying a gift off a registry.

Team Sassy gets a lesson on the importance of self-promotion from Nikki Davies, the woman behind CoNEXTion and a Platinum-tier #IAmRemarkable facilitator.

Why is self-promotion so important in today’s competitive world? Lack of self-promotion can contribute to wider inequity through disparities in promotions, opportunities and pay. While men tend to accurately evaluate or even overrate their performance, women typically underestimate their achievements. If tooting your own horn is something you avoid because you feel too shy or are afraid it would come off as bragging, read on for tips from expert Nikki Davies on how to confidently self-promote in the workplace and beyond.

Self-Promotion Is Not Bragging

Did you know that only one in two people feel that their managers ensure they receive credit for their work? Yet, for many of us, the idea of self-promotion feels like bragging, causing us to shy away from sharing our accomplishments.

People really do not know how to self-promote effectively.

“People really do not know how to self-promote effectively. They struggle with the concept, the stigma and the techniques. I have had a room full of business leaders, including CEOs, and they have never truly understood or appreciated their own achievements,” says Nikki.

Self-Promotion In The Workplace

Self-promotion involves actively showcasing one’s skills, achievements, and unique qualities to gain recognition and create opportunities. It is a vital aspect of personal and professional growth. For individuals, self-promotion can boost confidence, help you stand out from the crowd and attract potential employers or clients. For businesses or brands, self-promotion helps build credibility, expand the customer base and establish a strong market presence.

According to Nikki, “Self-promotion can become a powerful part of your life and improve your self-image and self-esteem.”

How To Start Your Self-Promotion Journey

Let’s dive into some tips that we learned during our #IamRemarkable session with Nikki Davies, which might just help you get started on your own self-promotion journey:

  • Embrace your accomplishments: Acknowledge your achievements and the value you bring to the table. Don’t be shy about sharing your successes and the impact you’ve made in your personal and professional life. Remember, you deserve recognition!
  • Overcome the fear of bragging: Many of us hesitate to self-promote because we worry about coming across as show offs. But here’s the thing; effectively showcasing your talents and accomplishments is not bragging – it’s owning your worth. Embrace the confidence to share your story. It’s not bragging if it’s based on facts.
  • Learn the art of storytelling: Storytelling is a powerful tool for self-promotion. Craft compelling narratives that highlight your skills, experiences, and the positive outcomes you’ve achieved. Share your journey in a way that captivates and inspires others.
  • Collaborate with friends and colleagues: Get a group of friends or colleagues together each week to track and share your achievements out loud. By celebrating each other’s successes, you can gain support and encouragement in your self-promotion efforts.
  • Be genuine and authentic: While self-promotion is about showcasing your strengths, it’s important to stay true to yourself. People appreciate honesty and authenticity, and it will help you build trust and credibility.

From tech to aviation and F&B, we chat to five women about their experiences working in industries that are typically dominated by men…

Thanks to the gender gap in both pay and leadership roles, it’s hard enough to be a woman in the workplace. So what if you’re the only woman in your workplace? A recent study concluded that women who are “Onlys”—meaning, they are often one of the only people of their race or gender in the room at work—have especially difficult day-to-day experiences. This, coupled with stories of mansplaining, sexual harassment and gender-based micro-aggressions, are likely to be at least part of the reason why women tend to avoid more lucrative, male-dominated industries like STEM and finance –  but what is the reality of working in a male-heavy environment?

Ahead, five women who have worked in a range of traditionally male-dominated industries share their stories, along with their top advice for success.

Women In Male-Dominated Industries: Alycia, Tech

Alycia

Industry: Tech

My background is quite varied. I worked for an airline, global bank and education before making the leap into starting my own tech businesses. Gender discrimination definitely exists in tech like it does in any other industry, but in my experience, being a woman has not been a huge disadvantage. The key is to acknowledge it, but don’t let it define you.

What has been surprising are the number of meetings I’ve had where men naturally direct all questions to the other men in the room, even if they aren’t qualified to answer the specific question. A recent memorable meeting was when the man I was presenting to avoided eye-contact with me, and simply scrolled through his phone the entire conversation. It’s one of the very few meetings where I chose not to follow up with a company.

That being said, I don’t feel like gender is a big issue on a day-to-day work basis. I’ve never felt that I didn’t receive a promotion or higher pay because of my gender. In tech, it’s quite meritocratic, and the parameters of success are very much based on knowing what you are doing, and the quality and output of your work.

If you’re looking to get into the tech industry, definitely start with learning how to code. And if you are an engineer, ensure you have a good handle on the business side of things too.

Women In Male-Dominated Industries: Eva, Aviation

Eva

Industry: Aviation

In flight school I was the only girl in a class of 24. Until then, I had never given much thought to the fact that I would be entering a male-dominated profession. My classmates were great and I really felt part of the group. I never experienced that being female was either an advantage or a disadvantage in obtaining or passing a job interview.

When you look at the statistics and note that only about 5% of airline pilots are female, yes we are a minority. On a day-to-day basis, that means on almost all the flights I operate, I work with male colleagues, and I am treated with completely the same respect and consideration as them.

We grow up in a society where we think of certain professions as “male” or “female”. When young girls are never exposed to women in the flight deck, they pick different role models in other professions. The idea to become an airline pilot simply does not occur to a lot of girls. Female pilots of my generation are by no means pioneers in this profession, but I hope that by being more visible on social media and being featured in the press, we will lead more girls to consider a career in aviation.

For women looking to become a pilot, I give the same advice as I would to future male aviators. Do your research, for example about the state of the industry during COVID, and the unstable nature of the aviation industry; have a back-up plan and if it really resonates with you, then go for it.

Women In Male-Dominated Industries: Gwen, F&B

Gwen

Industry: Food & Beverage

I used to work in the F&B industry, working my way up the ladder until I was in charge of multi-outlet operations, as well as overseeing the entire F&B department of a hotel. It’s definitely a tough industry to survive in overall; it’s a labor intensive field, and you have to be both mentally and physically strong to do the job – being female makes it 10 times harder.

A lot of the time, I was talked down to and treated like I wasn’t enough. My male managers would try to push me around, and basically get me to do their work for them, or they would take out their frustrations out on me since I was seen as an easy target. In addition, because of the physical aspects required, my male colleagues could be quite patronising when I needed help lifting heavy objects.

F&B is a very male-driven, high testosterone industry, and in my experience, if people think that you’re too soft spoken, they assume that you won’t cut it. I often felt like I had to put up a strong front so that my male colleagues wouldn’t think I was weak. I always acted tougher than I was during my time there instead of being my authentic self. It was exhausting, and it definitely shaped a lot of mental stress that I was experiencing during that point in my life.

In most industries there is probably a gender pay gap, but in a male dominated industry like F&B, it is much more prevalent. I remember one job I had where I was underpaid, and yet was given additional responsibilities, with no mention of a salary raise or a promotion. I knew that I deserved more and requested more pay, but was refused, so I resigned. I later found out that they hired someone to replace me – someone male –  and they paid him 40% more than what I had been getting.

For any women looking to get into the industry, my advice is don’t be afraid to speak up and also speak your truth. I do think the industry is improving a lot for women, especially within the more innovative restaurant groups in the city. Passion and perseverance are key – you need plenty of both to last and succeed in F&B.

Women In Male-Dominated Industries: Niki, Tech

Niki

Industry: Tech & Manufacturing

I have been in the tech industry for the past four years working for big tech firms and scale ups that focus on B2C apps. My experience in the tech industry has been pretty equal, and I attribute that to the tech industry being, at least in my experience, naturally progressive.

When I worked in China and at a Chinese tech firm, I’m not sure if it was because of the culture or the industry itself, but females were treated more “delicately” compared to males. It’s not like there weren’t any females in management or opportunities for my career progression, but women were treated like we needed to be cared for instead of just being able to do things ourselves.

The time in my career when I did feel there was a lack of representation and where I felt like I didn’t necessarily belong was when I was in the manufacturing industry. Every Director level and above were all men – it definitely felt like there was a boys club. I wouldn’t say that I was treated badly or differently, but it made it difficult to see a potential future for myself. I do think representation matters, and if you don’t see the same gender or race as you in senior roles, it’s hard to feel motivated to break the barrier.

My advice for girls and women wanting to get into the tech industry is to just go for it. The tech industry is not perfect, but it is progressive. Don’t overthink. Apply and don’t doubt yourself!

Women In Male-Dominated Industries: Olivia, Tech

Olivia

Industry: Tech

Before I founded my own tech startup, I worked in a hardware company – both are very male-oriented. I have fairly ambivalent feelings about being a woman in the tech industry. On the one hand, everyone does seem to be extra polite towards me. On the other, my opinion, ambitions and skills are often not treated seriously. I think this is especially the case because I am a young woman. I need to work harder than my male counterparts to prove my efforts and abilities.

My own startup, BeautyFact App, is a very female-oriented tech product. Because many of the leaders and management teams of tech incubation programmes and other business competitions are male, I find they usually skip over my product, or ask a lot of unrelated questions as they simply don’t understand it.

“Women supporting women” may be a bit of a cliche, but I think it’s still valid. In order to encourage girls and women to succeed across industries, I think the sharing of resources and experiences, as well as collaboration, is vital. I would also encourage men to support their female colleagues or teammates by listening more, and always asking for their consent instead of just assuming they want or don’t want to do something.
