Thinking of (re)downloading Tinder, Bumble or Hinge? Before you dedicate hours to building your profile, here are our honest thoughts on the most popular dating apps in Hong Kong…

We’ve all been there — swiping left for hours on end without a decent match in sight, thinking “How the hell did I get here?” Don’t be too hard on yourself. After all, dating in Hong Kong is notoriously difficult — and that’s before adding apps to the mix. Nevertheless, it seems that algorithmic connection is here to stay, because God knows you’re not going to have that 90s-era meet-cute of your dreams. But before you enlist to the warzone that is online dating, here are our honest thoughts on seven of the most popular dating apps in Hong Kong.

Tinder — Nightmarecore

I’ll hold my hands up here and say I’m a hypocrite, because I actually met my long-term partner on Tinder in Hong Kong. But a) that was during the pandemic (things have changed) and b) queer and straight Tinder are two different worlds. From unsolicited dick pics to scammers, creeps and a seemingly endless stream of emotionally unavailable finance bros, straight Hong Kong Tinder can feel like it’s where romance goes to die. Unless you’re looking for a one-night stand with a man who will spend the whole night talking about himself, take our advice and don’t download this app.

Coffee Meets Bagel — The innocent one

This app is actually pretty cute, and if you’re looking for something serious it’s a welcome respite from Tinder. Essentially everyone on here is seeking legitimate connections and relationships, so you don’t have to worry so much about ghosters. The problem with Coffee Meets Bagel is that there aren’t nearly the quantity of users as other apps, which can be difficult if you’re used to swiping past hundreds of faces. Also, because Coffee Meets Bagel is known to be more popular locally, some men join specifically to connect with Asian women, which can be a little yikes (no one wants to be fetishised).

Bumble — You’ll download it at some point

There’s a lot of good things about this app, but that hasn’t stopped it from leaving my single friends screaming into a pillow. First off, practically all of Hong Kong has a Bumble profile, so be prepared to bump into friends, exes, mutuals and colleagues (congrats, you now know that Michael from accounting is ethically nonmonogamous). As for the whole prompt thing, this really does give you an insight into someone’s personality beyond their pictures. The down side? It’s actually easier to get the ick from someone’s self-described insightfulness than from an unflattering selfie.

Feeld — If you’re into it, you’re into it

If you’re looking for a serious, committed, monogamous relationship, this may not be the app for you. But if you’re looking to explore your sexuality openly and intimately, Feeld really does cater to every desire. It’s also a solid resource if you’re already in a relationship and looking for a third (or another couple), and it’s one of the most queer- and trans-friendly dating apps in Hong Kong. Just be careful about who you open up to, because while all the apps have some bots and scammers, this one is rife with both.

Hinge — RIP Hinge Hong Kong

Hinge took “designed to be deleted” a little too far, because you can’t actually use it in Hong Kong. However, it does work if you’ve downloaded it outside the city — meaning the type of person to use it in Hong Kong has likely not been here long (or is only here temporarily). There’s also a kind of arrogant vibe on Hinge, with the not-so-subtle connotation that you’re “too good” for other apps.

Grindr — Stay safe out there

No real introduction required for this one, considering it’s the world’s most popular dating app for the queers and the gays. But while Grindr markets itself as open to trans and nonbinary queer people, users’ lived experiences say otherwise. Over the years, we’ve heard major complaints about pretty much every bigotry in the book — transphobia, racism, body-shaming, you name it (not to mention the horror stories about revenge porn). That said, it is and forever will be the go-to app for queer men.

Hey Mandi — Good concept, depressing execution

In theory, this app is a great idea: you can match and start conversations with other users before seeing what they look like. That’s right, there isn’t any opportunity to judge someone’s looks before swiping, or for profile pictures to get in the way of a solid connection. Sadly, though, this has made it a little too easy for people who are already in relationships to set up a profile without anyone knowing. Yikes.

Final Thoughts

While dating in Hong Kong is difficult no matter what, that doesn’t stop people from entering into new relationships every day — so don’t lose hope. These are honest reviews of the apps and their downsides from our personal experiences, but there’s no harm in setting up a profile and trying it out for yourself. If you’ve been convinced to stay off the apps, though, check out our regularly updated monthly event listings in Hong Kong for a chance to meet someone IRL for a change.

Make sexual wellness a priority this year with these seven beginner tips…

It’s common to set health and wellness goals, which can include hitting the gym, eating healthy, taking up a meditation practice or getting more sleep. We set these goals because they help us feel happier, healthier and get us closer to fulfilling our potential physically and mentally. But how many of your goals relate to your sexual wellness?

Sex is an often overlooked aspect of health and wellness due to the shame and taboo that surrounds the topic. However, it’s a natural, healthy and important part of who we are. Read on to find out why prioritising your sexual wellness is important, plus how to get started…

Why Does Sexual Wellness Matter?

Studies have shown that sex – both solo and partnered – provides a myriad of health and wellness benefits. Physical benefits include improved sleep and a stronger immunity system, among other heart, hormonal and cognitive benefits.

That famous “after-sex glow” is caused by the release of feel-good hormones that uplifts our moods and eases stress and anxiety. Sex is also said to connect us to our life force on an energetic level, and can boost our creativity, self-esteem and confidence. Between partners, good sex is a form of intimacy and is positively correlated with relationship satisfaction.

Overall, sexual wellness is a key way to boost your general health and vitality.

sexual wellness self pleasure

Make Self-Pleasure A Habit

You don’t need a partner in order to reap the benefits of sexual wellness. Masturbation is a great way to connect with yourself, and it’s an empowering feeling to know that your body is capable of experiencing pleasure, regardless of your relationship status.

Try broadening your definition of self-pleasure to include sensual rituals. You can try dancing naked in your bedroom, or putting your hand on each of your body parts and giving them love; or even massaging your body with a fragrant oil after a shower.

Remember, self-pleasure is a practice. It isn’t always about orgasms (even though they can feel great!); it’s about embracing all forms of pleasure, and doing things that get you out of your head so you can be more fully present to what feels good in your body.

Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that is found at the base of your pelvis. Everyone can benefit from doing regular exercises to strengthen the pelvic floor, also known as Kegels. Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can help with urinary incontinence, increase sensations during sex and lead to stronger orgasms. For women in particular, a strong pelvic floor contributes to better sexual arousal and increased lubrication; while in men, the benefits include ejaculatory control and stronger erections.

To get started with Kegels, try to stop yourself mid-stream the next time you pee and locate the muscles that are contracting. Those are the muscles you’ll use in your Kegels. To do one Kegel repetition, tighten the pelvic floor muscles and lift up, holding the contraction for five seconds; follow with an exhale and full release of the muscles for five seconds.

For beginners, a set of 30 Kegels a day would take a couple of minutes and be a good place to start. You can eventually work your way up to doing sets three times a day – ideally morning, afternoon and night. Or whenever you have a boring meeting in the office!

sexual wellness Learn New Sex Skills

Learn New Sex Skills

Did you know that sex is a skill, and it’s not something that we are born naturally good at? We have Hollywood to blame for these romantic notions that somehow sex is always meant to be spontaneous, effortless and natural.

In reality, sex is something that takes time, effort and commitment to become good at. Just like learning a language or taking up a sport. Because most of us have had a limited sex education, we are often left to figure out how to get better at sex by trial and error. This is where seeking out the services of a sex coach can come in handy to fill those gaps. Or maybe you could try listening to a sex-positive podcast like Better in Bed and Shameless Sex, reading a book or attending a workshop on sex.

When we make the effort to pick up new sexual skills and knowledge – such as sexual pleasure techniques, sex toys, breathwork, sexual anatomy, communication, intimacy and relationship skills – it improves our sexual wellness and we become more comfortable and confident with our sexuality.

Be Aware Of Your STI Status

STIs (sexually transmitted infections) have a profound impact on sexual and reproductive health worldwide. They are incredibly common, yet many people ignore this aspect of their health. It’s a good idea to get yourself tested at least once a year or more depending on your level of sexual activity. This way, you always have a good idea of your STI status, which allows you to be as healthy as you can be, whilst also keeping your partner(s) safe.

Most STIs can be completely cured with modern medication, and the ones that can’t be cured can be effectively managed and minimised to the point where they won’t cause any serious health problems. Prioritising your sexual health and wellness also means making sure that you’re taking adequate precautions to prevent STIs and having honest, upfront conversations with partners, ideally before you engage in any sexual activity.

sexual wellness communication

Talk About Sex

Sex is often an awkward and embarrassing to talk about – most of us have never been shown how to have a conversation on the topic in a meaningful and constructive way. However, a great sex and love life relies on effective communication. The more we talk about sex, the better our experience of sex is likely to be. After all, the more clearly you can express what you like and need to your lover(s), the more they are able to pleasure you – and vice versa!

The more you make sex a regular, ongoing topic of conversation in your relationship, the easier it will be to bring up if and when issues come up in your sex life. If it still feels too intimidating to talk to a partner about sex, try confiding in a close friend first and building your comfort level from there.

Make Sexual Wellness Your Priority

Cultivating health and wellness has become a big priority, particularly over the last decade or so. And making sexual wellness a priority is even more of a recent occurrence, but it’s a step in the right direction. By making sexual wellness a priority in your life, you’re likely to have better and more sex, and be a lot happier and healthier too.

Ultimately, if you’re starting out with sexual wellness, begin with asking yourself what sexual wellness means to you. Once you’ve defined that, then you can start to create your own habits and rituals that feel good for you.

sexual wellness celebrate your body

Celebrate Your Body

Embrace and celebrate your body by focusing on what it can do rather than how it looks. Appreciate its strength, flexibility, and the pleasure it can bring. By valuing what your body can accomplish and the sensations it provides, you’ll develop a healthier, more loving relationship with yourself. This positive shift in perspective not only boosts your self-esteem but also enhances your sexual confidence and enjoyment, making you feel more empowered and connected in your intimate moments.

Stay Hydrated And Eat Well

Proper hydration and a nutritious diet are essential for your overall well-being, including your sexual health. Drinking plenty of water keeps your body running smoothly, while a balanced diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants boosts your energy and stamina. Including foods that promote good blood circulation and hormone balance can improve your sexual wellness, helping you feel more vibrant and ready to enjoy intimate moments.

horoscope compatibility zodiacs elements

Horoscope Compatibility: Elements

Astrologers say the secret to finding your perfect cosmic match lies in the elements – those fundamental forces of nature that shape our personalities and love languages. Checking out each zodiac sign’s elements is one of the easiest ways to unlock horoscope compatibility.

The four celestial elements – fire, water, earth, and air – each rule over distinct traits that can mesh effortlessly for some pairs…or combust in spectacular fashion for others! Whether you’re a fiery fire sign, an emotional water sign, a whimsical air sign or a nurturing earthy soul, understanding your element is crucial for manifesting that dream romance. So let’s dive into reading those elemental vibes, shall we?

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are known for their passionate nature and wild spirits that ignite romances with their fiery energy. These zodiac signs bring the heat, but like an uncontrolled flame, they can go from sizzling to scorched earth in a flash if their fire isn’t fuelled regularly. That’s where air signs like Geminis, Libras, and Aquarians come in. These matches fan the flames of fire signs with their fresh inspiration and intellectual spark. Their adventurous spirit and stimulating conversations keep the fire signs’ desires burning brightly.
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) offer the grounded and down-to-earth foundation that any partnership needs to truly thrive, as these nurturing lovers value stability and seek security in their connections. However, the deep sensibilities of water signs like Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces can shake up an earth sign’s familiar grooves, but by remaining open to the tidal flow of water signs, their sensitivity can help earth signs blossom and grow.
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces) are deeply connected to their emotions and possess strong intuition. Water signs find the greatest compatibility with other water signs, as they understand and resonate with each other’s emotional depths. Additionally, water signs harmonise well with earth signs, who provide the nurturing foundation that allows a water sign’s sensitivity to safely blossom.
  • And air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are like the winds, always blowing in new ideas and perspectives into any relationship. Air signs vibe best with fellow air signs, sparking off each other’s free-flowing, non-committal energy. They also pair well with fire signs, as the air continually fuels the flames of creativity. Though heads up – an air sign’s restless spirit and flaky ways can torch even the strongest bond if paired with a sign that demands constant attention.

Horoscope Compatibility: Planets

If you’re ready to take your relationship intel to the next cosmic level, it’s time to dig deeper than just your zodiac signs (sun signs). Your sun sign may show your core essence, but your full birth chart is the map to your complete celestial DNA. Hit up astro-charts.com, plug in your exact birth details, and unlock the secrets of your planetary profile. From there, you can start comparing placements with your S.O. to see your true compatibility. If your chart qualities and elements sync up, you’re likely a harmonious match made in the heavens. But if the signs clash big time, that’s where issues can arise. Here are the key planets to analyse:

  • Your Moon sign governs your emotional world, spilling the tea on how you connect on a heart level and nurture your inner circle. When it comes to love, Moon sign chemistry can be make-or-break for finding a partner who just gets you on a soul level. If your Moon signs sync up, it creates an intuitive understanding and safe space to bare your true feelings.
  • Your natal Venus sign is akin to your astrological eros, determining the types of partners who ignite your passions. Understanding your love language allows you to decode who truly lights up your heart’s deepest yearnings and invites the perfect kind of ravishing into your boudoir.
  • When it’s time to take action and pursue your desires, the planet Mars becomes your cosmic ally. This celestial warrior governs your energy, drive and sexual expression, ultimately revealing what or who lights your fire in life.
  • If you’re seeking a love that stands the test of time, it’s time to focus on the influence of Saturn. While not as passionate as Venus or Mars, Saturn holds the key to building relationships that endure. Your Saturn sign unveils the valuable lessons you need to learn in love, from establishing healthy boundaries to putting in the necessary effort for a deep and meaningful connection.

And Pisces’ emotional depth and empathy can draw out Virgo’s sensitive side, getting the usually analytical Virgin to tap into their feelings. But when these two come together, it creates the perfect yin and yang balance of flowing emotion and solid structure. Cancer’s healing vibes find grounding in Cap’s wisdom, as the Crab feels safe to open up with their reliable partner. And Capricorn finds inspiration in Cancer’s expressiveness, learning to get in touch with their own feelings. Though it may take effort to navigate each other’s ‘love languages’ – with Cancer wanting sentimental gestures and Cap preferring acts of duty – this pairing is built to last.

Both these independent signs value their alone time, so they don’t crowd each other. It’s time to get romantic this festive season!

With so much going on in the lead up to Christmas and New Year’s, it’s all too easy to lose sight of the important things and not take time out of our everyday routines to appreciate our other halves (or besties!). So, with that in mind, we’ve decided to implement the 12 Dates Of Christmas to make sure we fit in some quality couple time at what is usually a very busy stretch of the year. We’ve come up with some suggestions to get you started, but the idea is that these 12 Dates Of Christmas don’t cost the earth. So, we’ve tried to make it as cheap and cheerful as possible (with a bit of imagination, you could even plan all your activities for free!). Keep scrolling for more…

12 Dates of Christmas, Dating Inspo, Date Ideas: Tree Decorating

1. Pine-ing For You

There’s no better way to kick off the festive season than by choosing a Christmas tree. It’s not always possible to squish the six-foot pine of your dreams into your Hong Kong flat, so you may need to temper your expectations. If you don’t know where to start looking, head to The Flower Market for a browse. You’ll find all sizes of real and artificial trees there (and may even pick up some decorations while you’re at it). Once you’ve bought your tree, bring it back and decorate it together while enjoying a glass or two of mulled wine or hot chocolate. Don’t forget to have some Christmas tunes playing in the background to really get you in the mood. Everybody now… “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas!”

2. Spice Things Up

We love a challenge here at Sassy HQ and think that dates with a competitive edge are always a winner. That’s why we will be introducing a “Ready, Steady, Cook” as one of our 12 Dates Of Christmas. You and your partner decide which one of you will be on main course duty and which one will be in charge of dessert. If you are taking on the main, your partner will pick out three ingredients that you need to include in your dish, and then you will pick out three ingredients that your partner needs to include in their dessert (or vice versa). You can either let each other know in advance what ingredients you have chosen (so you can make sure you have everything else you need to complete your meal in stock), or you can make it harder by only revealing them just before you have to start cooking. Make it more challenging by setting a time limit. Either way, at the end of it you should both get to sit down and enjoy a candlelit two-course, home-cooked dinner. And if all goes wrong, there’s always takeaway!

3. Happy Trails

Plan a hike up Mount High West on a clear day so you reach its peak in time for sunset. There are plenty of steps to climb en route, but for your efforts, you’ll be rewarded with amazing 360-degree views of the city below. It’s around a 3km hike from Kennedy Town, which takes you through Lung Fu Shan Country Park. You might want to pack a craft beer to sip on at the top as you take in the sights and catch your breath. Don’t forget to bring your phone or a camera as you’ll definitely want to take a couple of selfies. To mix things up on the hike down, head back via Lugard Road and the Morning Trail. If you’re too tired or if you lingered over that beer a little too long and it’s getting dark, you can always catch a taxi at The Peak to deposit you back into Central.

4. Catch A Flick

We couldn’t have a 12 Dates Of Christmas list without including a Christmas movie night. You can either both pick one festive-themed movie each and do a back-to-back viewing session or toss a coin to see which one of you gets to pick the film. We can never pass up “Love Actually” at this time of year, but the choice is yours (depending on what you can find on Netflix!). All you need to complete your night is some popcorn and drinks. Then just cuddle up and wait for the feel-good factor to kick in!

5. Long Walks On The Promenade

If, like us, you can’t help but marvel at Hong Kong’s skyline every time you see it lit up, then this is a date that will definitely appeal. Pack a picnic (a stop at M&S should help up your drink and snack game!) and take yourself off to the Art Park in West Kowloon Cultural District. Make sure you time your trip so that you arrive before dark and can eat your goodies as the sun goes down. All you need to do is pick a spot on the grass by the Waterfront Promenade, throw down a blanket and enjoy the views looking over Victoria Harbour to Hong Kong Island.

6. Music To My Ears

If you’re looking for a daytime date idea and are a fan of vinyl records, then take a trip on the MTR and while away some hours popping in and out of the record shops in Shek Kip Mei, Sham Shui Po and Prince Edward. It’s sure to spark up some conversations about your musical tastes and you may even end up making some purchases or finding a hidden gem! You’ll also find plenty of coffee shops around to call into when you need a pitstop.

7. A Glamping Adventure

Staycations are so 2020. This Christmas, why not try your hand at glamping instead? Encompassing all the fun of sleeping under the stars but with a comfortable bed instead of a sleeping bag, it’s the ideal middle ground. Head here for our ultimate guide to glamping in Hong Kong.

12 Dates of Christmas, Dating Inspo, Date Ideas: Games Night

8. One-On-One

Our 12 Dates Of Christmas definitely includes a games day. Head to the top floor of the Dragon Centre in Sham Shui Po and prepare to be transported back to the past. They have a great selection of Western and Asian arcade games to play and, in our experience, it’s never too busy. Or if you prefer board games to arcade games, make your way to Wheat and Wood in Kennedy Town. There’s an amazing collection of board games to choose from and you can order drinks and snacks while you’re there! Or if you’ve got a good game collection at home, a cosy night in works too!

9. A Quick Romantic Getaway

Take a day trip together. There’s no shortage of islands you can visit here in Hong Kong and one of our favourites is Cheung Chau. Waste no time on the way there by taking the fast ferry from Pier 5 in Central, which takes around 35 minutes. Spend the day pottering around and take a leisurely hike up to North Lookout Pavilion for some good views. If you’d rather see the island on two wheels, you can easily hire a bike there. Make sure you refuel while you’re there at one of the many Cantonese restaurants, where seafood is a speciality. Take the slow ferry back at sundown (which takes around an hour) and pay a bit extra for the deluxe class, which gives you access upstairs and to the outside deck!

12 Dates Of Christmas: Beer Date

10. All Bubbly Inside

Another way to soak up the sights of the city (and a great chilled date idea) is to plan a night of beers or bubble tea by the bay! Make a pit stop at one of the city’s best craft beer vendors to pick up some brews or one of our favourite bubble tea spots for some boba and bring it with you. Then decide which waterfront to hit up for a stroll and a spot of people watching. You’ll likely find us at either Central Ferry Piers, Quarry Bay Park or the waterfront at Kennedy Town, Sai Wan Ho or TST.

11. To The Moon And Back

For a spot of culture, we recommend a museum date. Head to M+ for a spot of culture, and don’t miss the opportunity to take plenty of photos for the ‘Gram while you’re there — the architecture is stunning! We’re also big fans of the Hong Kong Space Museum. Bring out your inner geek by having a go at “Gravity Surfing” together and pose for a photo inside a Re-Entry Capsule.

12. Cheers To Us!

For the last date, you may as well push the boat out and treat yourselves to a fancy cocktail or mocktail at one of the city’s rooftop bars. Get dressed up for the occasion and make a night of it. To add a surprise element, why not pick each other’s cocktails? You may find you end up sampling more than one or two tipples on the menu.
