Sassy Team gets the low down from Divya Butani, aka theveggiewifey, on why carbs are not the enemy.

Atkins, Ketogenic, Paleo and Dukan low-carb diets have all been the rage at some point, particularly for their significant weight loss results the world over. However, additional research on women’s health and how females should nourish their bodies throughout the various stages of the menstrual cycle raises concerns on the long-term effects of restricting carbohydrates, our main source of fuel.

There are five things to consider before you banish pasta, rice and bread from the menu…

Women Need Carbohydrates To Produce Reproductive Hormones

Female hormones including the luteinizing hormone (LH), estrogen, follicle stimulating hormones (FSH) and progesterone are produced near the stem of your brain, at the hypothalamus and pituitary glands. These glands in the brain work with your adrenal glands (located at the top of your kidneys) to form a hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, better known as the HPA axis.

This connection is vital in managing stress, including responses to immunity, libido, mood and energy. Not having enough energy or access to enough calories can affect the way our bodies create all of these hormones.

Additionally, men and women handle biological stress differently. When encountering biological stress, men resort to ‘fight-or-flight’ mode and women resort to ‘tend-or-befriend’ mode. This means, women often need connection and support in stressful situations.

Optimal oxytocin levels (the essential hormone for positive feelings) are needed for women to manage their stressors effectively. Therefore, an optimal functioning hormonal system is necessary not only for reproductive health, but also our mental health.

Carb-Free Diets May Result In A Hormonally Stressed Body

Carbohydrates are one of the three macronutrients our bodies need in larger amounts. Protein and fat are the other two macronutrients. Carbohydrates are easily broken down to glucose, which is also our body’s preferred source of energy.

Even though our bodies can make its own glucose (energy) through the liver, it is an emergency reserve for when we are truly in survival mode. When our bodies are pushed to make their own glucose using this reserve, it relies on stress hormones (cortisol and norepinephrine) to trigger the emergency response. If we were to do this on a continual basis, our bodies would be constantly stressed and anxious.

Long-term stress or chronic stress has shown to develop lower immunity, heart disease, sleeping disorders, high blood pressure and susceptibility to cancer.

Too Few Complex Carbohydrates May Result In Menstrual Delays

The overproduction of stress hormones, such as cortisol and norepinephrine, in response to the emergency production of glucose results in a hormonal imbalance. This causes HPA axis dysfunction.

Consequently, some women can experience amenorrhea which is the natural absence of the menstrual period for more than 3 months. One of the most common causes of amenorrhea is functional hypothalamic amenorrhea, a condition caused by a very low-calorie diet, disordered eating, excessive exercise or stress.

This study mentioned that one of the main side effects of the ketogenic diet on adolescents aged 12-19 was menstrual dysfunction, which included late or irregular periods. The long-term effects of amenorrhea are infertility, decline in bone health and heart disease.

The Absence of Complex Carbs May Result In Loss of Muscle And A Change In Blood pH

Our bodies can convert carbohydrates into glucose very quickly when compared to protein and fat. It takes between 1-2 hours for carbohydrates to convert to glucose, 3-4 hours for protein and several hours for fat.

The brain, nerve cells, and the development of red blood cells all rely on glucose for energy. There is only a certain degree our bodies can convert fat and protein into glucose, a process called gluconeogenesis. Beyond what our body is able to convert to glucose, it will resort to breaking down protein tissue (muscle) to produce glucose, resulting in muscle loss in the long-term.

Additionally, when fat is broken down for energy, a chemical called ketone is produced in the blood. Ideally, those on a ketogenic diet would want the body to start breaking down fat as a form of glucose instead of carbs, a process known as ketosis.

However, ketosis does not occur unless one were to consume less than 20-50g of carbohydrates per day, which is extremely difficult to do. If your body breaks down fat too quickly, it is possible there will be a buildup of ketone and it may turn your blood acidicx Once your blood changes its PH levels, it can cause fatigue, and in some extreme cases some people can slip into a coma.

Low-Carb Diets Can Affect Your Thyroid Function

The thyroid is a small but extremely powerful butterfly-shaped organ in the middle of our neck. It controls some of the most important functions of our body, such as how fast your heart beats, how deeply you breathe, and how much weight you lose or gain. The way the thyroid controls these activities is through the release of hormones. With high thyroid hormones, the metabolism speeds up, and with low thyroid hormones, the metabolism slows down.

A constant energy supply is needed for thyroid functionality. Without adequate energy supply, the thyroid may not be able to release these vital hormones to fuel bodily functions.

Furthermore, there are two types of hormones our thyroid makes: an inactive T4 hormone (thyroxine) and an active T3 hormone (triiodothyronine). The main hormone that is secreted in our body is the T4 hormone, and T3 is created by converting T4 via another enzyme (5’-deiodinase). Low carbohydrate diets directly correlate to the low activity of this enzyme, resulting in lower production of T3 hormone. This change can alter the way our body processes fat, resulting in higher cholesterol and potential heart disease.

Low carb diets for women carb-free eating hormones nutrition health and wellness did i eat that?

Final thoughts…

Over the years, many have associated carbs with sugar, therefore, weight-gain. However, there are many types of carbohydrates, and when eaten in moderation, not all are bad for us.

Eating a well-balanced diet that includes simple and complex carbohydrates (fruits, veggies, whole-grain and legumes) can provide ample benefit to our bodies.

Gaining more insight and being more self-reflective with our daily activities can help us understand how much of each macronutrient we need in order to fulfill our fitness or health goals. Additionally, taking note of our medical history, genetic history and possible health concerns are important to acknowledge before following any diet.

It is important to remember that diets are extremely personal, and can create different reactions for each individual.

IMI stocks only the best science-led health supplements and vitamins, so you can see real wellness results — like combatting stress and improving your sleep.

Integrated medicine clinic IMI brings us science-led health supplements and nutritional vitamins that are equally loved by doctors and clients worldwide. The clinical-grade formulas here are designed to efficiently deliver the therapeutic results that your mind and body deserve; free from bulking agents, fillers and additives, and catering to all dietary needs.

We advocate eating well-balanced, nutritious meals but there are times when an additional boost of vitamins and minerals is not just helpful but required! Whether you’re looking at probiotics when your gut’s been disrupted by illness or medicine, collagen when you’ve had a physical injury or surgery, or women’s multivitamins and inositol for PCOS/PCOD, complementary supplements can really change your life.

But it can be tough figuring out which supplements will actually give you the results you want. Skip the legwork at IMI, your new go-to for products that will help relieve stress and improve your sleep (we can’t stress how important a good night of rest is!). Selected by naturopaths, all of IMI’s supplements are easily absorbed, made with high-quality ingredients and led by science to boost relaxation and ease sleeplessness.

So what should you pick up? IMI’s herbal adaptogens will build your body’s resilience to stress while improving sleep at night and mental clarity during the day. The medical clinic’s naturopaths also recommend magnesium as a key staple for your health regime — the ideal mineral to increase relaxation and support better sleep as well as your physical body.

And vitamin Bs are key for reducing stress levels. In fact, studies show they’re able to support you throughout burnout! IMI’s formulas feature Bs in their active form — this is essential as one-third of the population have the MTHFR mutation, which means they cannot absorb B vitamins unless in this form.

Don’t miss IMI’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday Super Sale, from Friday, 24 to Monday, 27 November — the biggest sale in the year on supplements, for both the physical dispensary store and online shop.

Sassy Tip: Keep an eye out for IMI’s monthly “super weekends” where you can save up to 20% on over-the-counter supplements.

The world of nutrition can be overwhelming and full of mixed messages. From fad diets to the changing trends around body image, it truly is a minefield to navigate. We turned to Nu Performance for some expert guidance.

After feeling frustrated with a lack of energy and being unable to achieve some key health goals, despite eating “healthy,” two members of the Sassy team decided to seek out some expert advice. Seasoned nutritionist, Luke Davey, of Nu Performance helped us delve into the mysteries around our stalled progress by completing the Transformation Programme. Read on to find out where we were hitting roadblocks.

Week 1 — The Power Of A Personalised Plan

The first step was a one-to-one consultation with our nutritionist Luke. We discussed everything from our individual goals, dietary preferences and lifestyle constraints and then underwent a full body specialised imaging technique called a DEXCA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry) — the gold standard for measuring body composition, bone density, and mineral content. To round out week one, we shared our food photo diary. Full disclosure:

Being faced with the results of the DEXA scan and exposing some of our unhealthy eating habits was tough!

Key takeaway from week one: without fully understanding where we were starting our journey, it would have been impossible to make real progress.

Week 2 — Fail To Prepare, Prepare To Fail

With such busy schedules, we both noticed that our last-minute food choices were often where we were going “wrong’” (…hello tub of ice cream for dinner at the end of a bad day!). Food preparation was a big focus for us this week. From colourful fruits and vegetables to proteins and whole grains, we learned that a well-rounded diet is the foundation of good health. Luke shared a tailored recipe book with us which includes some easy and delicious high protein recipes which were quick to prepare, and he also gave some direction on better choices that we could make when grocery shopping to make sure we could look for some quick fixes.

In some cases it was as simple switching the brand of yoghurt we were eating, or which brand of protein bar has better carb to protein ratio.

Key takeaway from week two: There is so much power in creating habitual changes and nourishing our bodies with wholesome, nutrient-rich foods.

Week 3 — Finding Balance

Despite our best intentions, we were both falling back into some bad habits and realised that we needed to look at some long-term realistic improvements in our daily choices. For us it involved finding some alternative sweet snacks and simple ways to increase our protein intake (which plays a vital role in building and repairing tissues, supporting a healthy immune system, and regulating hormones!).

Key takeaway from week three: There are easy changes you can make to still enjoy your favourite treats in moderation.

Week 4 — Learning And Adapting

To ensure our relationship with food is healthy and the diet is sustainable, Luke provided us with nutritional facts which will help us stay on track for the coming weeks. The Transformation Programme with Nu Performance comes with a weekly check-in (it’s crucial to understand what our body needs in order to make the correct tweaks…), where we learn to develop a positive attitude towards food and how we can improve our overall health.

Even with a proper balanced diet, it is possible to have missed a few of the key minerals, causing us to be fatigued.

Key takeaway from week four: incorporating supplements into your balanced diet can go a long way and help you feel more fulfilled.

Final Thoughts…

Consulting with a nutritionist has been an eye-opening experience that definitely required patience and persistence to create a sustainable and healthy diet (and some lifestyle changes too). By addressing our goals with Luke, who has over 10 years of experience delivering programmes for weight loss, health and also sports performance, we felt confident that we could rely on his science-driven research to create a long-term, nutritional meal plan, that was just right for us and our individual life variations. we were able to create a realistic path toward our health goals, with daily support from Luke when we needed it.

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Artichoke Hearts In Herb Marinade

One of the tastiest (and easiest!) ways to eat artichoke hearts is out of a jar. This paired well with the starter I prepared (below). The marinated artichoke hearts from Organico were tender and the herb oil was infused with a mixture of basil, parsley and red chilli pepper that rounded out the artichoke’s nutty, earthy flavour. They can be eaten straight out of the jar or even cooked with a lemon garlic linguine pasta dish.

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Beer Jelly & Cheese On Za’atar Keto Protein Bites

MANFOOD’s beer jelly has a delightful jelly-like consistency that is more firm than jam spreads. Its sweet, citrusy and subtle strawberry flavour paired well with the bold and creamy blue brie I had at home. I placed the cheese and Beer Jelly on top of some za’atar-flavoured keto protein bites from Eva Bold, which added a nice layer of crunch and balanced the fruitiness of the jelly. This bite-sized starter was super easy to pull together and is great to serve at a last-minute dinner party.

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Vegetable Couscous Salad With Piccalilli, Sardines & Cherry Tomatoes

Already packed with lemon and olive oil, the sustainably fished sardines from Fish4Ever provided a zesty, bright flavour and meaty texture to the piccalilli’s pickled garden vegetables. Organico’s Vegetable Cous Cous was cooked in 8 minutes, fluffed with a fork, and brought a warm fragrance to the dish that felt like a hug. The diced courgettes, peppers and carrots that came mixed into the couscous tasted delicious alongside the tangy and crunchy piccalilli from MANFOOD.

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Butternut Squash And Ricotta Pasta

The crema di zucca, or butternut squash purée, from Bio Orto was rich and creamy, and softened into a smooth sauce in the pan. Once I mixed in the cooked spaghetti and olive oil, the simple, hearty and wholesome dish instantly came together. I topped it off with some toasted pumpkin seeds and ricotta, which added depth and crunch to the buttery smooth pasta. This was my favourite dish for its simplicity and rich flavour!

Gourmet Rebels Recipes

Baked Pesto Salmon

Another staple weeknight dish is salmon seasoned with salt and pepper and baked in the oven at 200ºC for 12-15 minutes. This time, I layered on the kale pesto from Bio Orto halfway and returned it to the oven. The pesto brought a nutty and vibrant garlic flavour to the smoky salmon fillets. Packed with olive oil, the pesto also helped the fillets stay juicy while baking so that they came out perfectly tender and flaky.

A Team Sassy favourite, NOSH is our go-to for easy healthy meals on the go — now, the brand is offering nutritious snack swaps to help you cut sugar cravings and keep you full!

What do we want? Healthy meals! When do we want it? At our doorstep first thing in the morning! Team Sassy has tried and tested NOSH’s meal plans, which are all dietitian-approved and made to suit different preferences, nutrition goals and dietary requirements, without skimping on taste or indulgence.

An obstacle to healthier eating is often snacking. How often do you finish a day of nutritious, relatively well-balanced meals only to reach out for a too-sweet bag of sugary treats? We’ve been there. But thanks to NOSH Direct, you can have your snack and eat it too, be it a Champagne-flavoured chocolate bar, fizzy cola gummies or Peking duck-flavoured chips

Meal Plans Backed By An Expert Dietitian

Heading to a nutritionist in Hong Kong isn’t in the cards for everyone, especially given its hefty price tag. NOSH does the work for you, providing meal plans backed by expert dietician Sylvia Lam who has more than 20 years of dietetic experience in Hong Kong, focusing on helping people to eat for wellness and weight management.

“People tend to pre-packaged processed foods due to convenience but they’re low in nutrients and contain unnecessary fat. NOSH’s meals remain tasty and nutritious as we use wholefoods – ingredients that have been processed or refined as little as possible and are free from additives or other artificial substances” – Slyvia

The fuss-free meal plans can be customised to suit everyone from vegetarians to flexitarians, those on a keto diet and more, as well as being specifically dedicated to our favourite foods (we love our pasta!)

NOSH Direct

Why Choose NOSH?

With over two million healthy meal plans delivered since launching, NOSH is clearly a crowd favourite! What sets it apart from the rest? “We use all kinds of fresh ingredients, including whole grains, high-quality protein, a wide range of colourful vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs and spices when creating their meals. Our meals can help achieve individualised goals and if you want some insight on which meal suits you best, simply raise your questions and concerns to me,” Slyvia.

Plus, eating healthy is also tied to better habits for the planet — all of NOSH’s packaging are eco-friendly and biodegradable (decomposing in 51 days in a landfill, to be precise!)

NOSH Direct

Enter NOSH Direct — Healthy And Guilt-Free Snack Swaps

The NOSH family is growing and now provides exclusive and curated health and wellness products sourced directly from the UK, Europe and the US. Focusing on helping you make within-reach sensible swaps instead of asking you to cut out your favourite foods completely, you’ll be able to shop everything from breakfast food to sweet treats, dairy-free milk, chips, health supplements and more.

You can also easily filter through your needs, whether they’re keto-friendly, vegan, organic or gluten-free – simply add all to cart and have it delivered right to your doorstep.

So What Exactly Are The Healthy Swaps?

If you have a sugar craving after a meal — you’re not alone! Swap your usual supermarket bar chocolate for Love Cocoa’s sugar-free bites (where a tree is planted for every purchase of a bar!) or Ask Mummy & Daddy’s vegan and naturally-flavoured gummies.

NOSH Direct

Our office usually has a bag of chips or two (to share!). We’d swap a supermarket-processed brand for SHORE’s high-fibre chips or Eva Bold’s keto-friendly protein bars (just what you need in the middle of the day).

NOSH Direct is constantly adding new health-conscious brands to its platform so keep your eyes peeled for more!

Wondering what the ban on CBD in Hong Kong means for CBD users? Can you still use CBD in the city? Here’s everything you need to know.

CBD certainly became a buzz word in the city as the hip new natural cure to anxiety, depression, insomnia, eczema and more. We saw it in our coffee, beer, hand creams and even workout leggings! But alas, the cannabinoid product compound is set to be banned in Hong Kong starting Wednesday, 1 February, 2023.

Is CBD Legal In Hong Kong?

As of Wednesday, 1 February, 2023, CBD will officially be banned in Hong Kong. The cannabis-derived substance will be prohibited under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and as such, possession and consumption of CBD will be subject to up to 7 years’ imprisonment and a $1 million fine.

The transporting of CBD for sale (including both import and export), will also be illegal.

What Is CBD?

CBD is one of the 104 known compounds in the cannabinoids group. Unlike THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD does not have any psychoactive effects. This means that CBD won’t make you “high”. The oil is made from different parts of a mature hemp plant (everything from its stalks to its flowers).

Is CBD The Same As Cannabis?

No, CBD is not the same as cannabis or marijuana. Though both come from the same family, the two plants they originate from are very different.

How Does CBD Work?

CBD works through the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) in our body to generate encocannabinoids and process phytocannabinoids. This helps us return to homeostasis (which is the stable norm we’re constantly ebbing and flowing from). CBD combines with the body to adjust our stress response. It’s known as an adaptogen because it adapts uniquely to you.
