bloodsport chariots of fire

In today’s Movie News Rundown: Joe Biden’s favorite film is about running and courage; what Trump thinks of Gone With the Wind and Bloodsport; and Borat 2 is reportedly the second-most streamed film of the year. Plus: What to expect from the American Film Market.

Chariots of Fire: It occurred to me last night that I have no idea what Joe Biden’s favorite movie is, and it turns out to be a story of  two men locked in a series of tight races, because you can’t make this stuff up.

Bloodsport: Donald Trump has named Citizen Kane and more recently Gone With the Wind among his Top 5 favorite films. But his guilty pleasures include Jean Claude Van Damme’s Bloodsport — finally something all Americans can agree on.

Very Nice: Borat 2, aka Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, is the second-most-watched film released on an SVOD platform this year, Variety reports, citing data form ScreenEngine/ASI. Hamilton was No. 1, but came out over the summer, so Borat may have time to surpass it before the year is out.

Borat's daughter actress Maria Bakalova and Sacha Baron Cohen

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, aka Borat 2, stars Maria Bakalova and Sacha Baron Cohen.

Wilde Film Paused: Olivia Wilde’s new film Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller with Florence Pugh, Chris Pine and Harry Styles that started filming in Los Angeles last month, has halted production because a member of the crew had a positive COVID-19 test, Variety reports.

American Film Market: AFM, where filmmakers can connect with more than 300 sales and production companies to pitch and potentially sell their films, begins Monday, online. AFM is a marketplace for big and small films alike — it’s where the North American rights for Parasite were sold, for example. This episode of Demystified, from our friends at Studiofest, tells you exactly what to expect if you attend:

Musicals!: Deadline exclusively reports that one of the first big AFM packages sold this year is Molly and the Moon, starring Kristen Bell and Jonathan Groff, an original musical from How I Met Your Mother creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas, who will direct. But what about the music? Harvey Mason Jr. of Sing and the Pitch Perfect films will be the executive music producer, Stephanie Diaz-Matos of The Get Down will be the music supervisor, and Nathan Larson will compose.

Efron for Sale: Deadline also says Zac Efron has joined the survival thriller Gold, which Altitude Film Sales will offer up to AFM buyers.

And Now: Yesterday’s Movie News Rundown.
