In today’s Movie News Rundown: Netflix wins big at the SAG Awards; Godzilla vs. Kong make a box office weekend look almost normal; new trailers for Loki and Black Widow.

SAG Winners: The Trial of the Chicago 7 won best ensemble cast in a motion picture and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom leads Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis won best actor and actress at Sunday’s SAG Awards. The Crown and Schitt’s Creek won the TV ensemble awards in drama and comedy. (All these projects originated on Netflix, except Schitt’s Creek, which streamed on Netflix after debuting on CBC Television.) The supporting actor winner was Daniel Kaluuya for Judas and the Black Messiah, and supporting actress went to Minari‘s Yuh-Jung Youn. Here are all of the winners.
Godzilla vs. Kong Conquers Box Office: The new film earned $48.5 million domestically, which would be respectable even if there weren’t a pandemic and it wasn’t also available on HBO Max. But this haul is especially impressive given those factors. It also pulled in more than $285 million worldwide. This is far and away the biggest domestic opening since COVID-19 took hold, The Hollywood Reporter notes.
Not That COVID Is Over: Deadline reports that Indian film star Akshay Kumar has been hospitalized as a precaution after contracting the virus during the production of Amazon’s Hindi movie Ram Setu. Deadline also cites “widespread local reports” that 45 members of the film’s crew tested positive and were quarantined. The film, Amazon’s first attempt at producing a local feature in India, had recently moved to Mumbai. according to Deadline.
Loki Trailer: This looks really, really fun. I like Owen Wilson as a left-field addition to the MCU, and that the Disney+ Marvel shows are shifting from weirdly metaphysical (WandaVision) to grounded action buddy movie (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) to Time Bandits.
Two Marvel Trailers? Look, their comic books got me through junior high. I owe them. Marvel also released a trailer Saturday for Black Widow which acknowledges what happened to her in Avengers: Endgame.
