It’s the perfect shade for medium skin with golden undertones. The doe-foot applicator means it’s precise enough to use without lipliner; you just need to clean up the edges before it sets. Does what it says on the tin — stays put after eating, drinking and more!

e.l.f Glow Reviver Lip Oil — Jam Session

I got turned onto this lip oil because of my sister and I’ve been obsessed ever since. It’s fairly subtle in colour if you just put on one coat, but it gets more pigmented the more you add on, so you have complete flexibility in how dramatic it looks. It goes on smooth and feels lovely, and gives you a nice glossy shine without any of the stickiness or drying effect of normal lipgloss. I have a fairly dark skin tone with mostly cool undertones so I tend to veer towards darker colours because bright pinks and orange tones don’t look good on me.

Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Lipstick — Miss America

For a red lip, I always reach for this Huda Beauty Liquid Matte Ultra-Comfort Transfer-Proof Lipstick. It’s great for pale skin and cool undertones as “Miss America” is more of a deep red (less orangey!). I always wear this with minimal skin makeup and a simple eye — just mascara and eyeliner — or else it’s a bit too much all together. I also dab a bit on my cheeks for blush, but only a pea-sized amount because it is very pigmented! The lipstick lasts a really long time — which means you need to make sure to put it on right the first time, otherwise it’s a nightmare to rub off and redo.

I love this high-shine Tom Ford liquid balm. I typically style it with a more elegant black dress or pants for that chic, neat look. I have a more pale skin tone, so darker red shades suit me better.

I’m more into natural nude lip looks, but if I do need to spice up my makeup with a red lip I use one from Peripera, a Korean brand. The shade complements my tan skin and cool undertones perfectly. I also like a more soft, powdery matte finish so I typically apply three generous dots of product on my lips and blend it out with a finger! Dior Addict Hydrating Shine Lipstick — Dior 8

I have tried a million red lipsticks in search of a “true red” shade (including cult-classics from M.A.C. and Sephora), and never found one that didn’t appear pink on my extremely pale and freckled skin. Then I tried “Dior 8”. It’s marketed as a bright orangey shade, but on me it shows up as the perfect Madonna-esque ruby red. It’s not very long-lasting, but I have no issue reapplying as the formula is so comfortable and hydrating.

What To Know About Botox

We all know that weight fluctuation, a change in the way our bodies feel or the way our skin and hair look are all completely natural things (and that those who get to age are lucky in their own right). But, we also know that every person is different! Perhaps you’d rather not intervene in the age-old (wink, wink) dilemma of getting older or maybe you have specific moisturisers and face serums (and maybe a go-to facial) specifically to keep your skin looking its best. On the other hand, maybe you’ve been getting curious about more involved treatments, like Botox and fillers.

What Is Botox, Filler & An Injectable?

Botox is actually a brand name for botulinum toxin type A, an injectable neurotoxin that affects the nerves and causes muscle weakening. Botulinum toxin (temporarily!) blocks the signals from a nerve to a muscle, which means the injected muscles can’t contract and tense up. This relaxing and softening of the muscle results in a smoothening look to the skin and the prevention of fine lines and wrinkles, which are usually formed by muscle contraction. The effects are temporary but can last up to several months.

An “injectable” simply means a drug that can be put into the body using a needle and syringe. And a dermal “filler” is a gel-like substance that is injected beneath the skin for various reasons, most commonly for cosmetic purposes like creating volume, smoothening lines and softening creases and enhancing facial contours. Most injectable fillers are made of hyaluronic acid and last for about six months or longer.

The most common botulinum toxin is, of course, Botox. Other brands include Dysport and Xeomin which all work in similar ways.

What Is Botox Used For?

Injected in very small doses, botulinum toxin is most commonly known for reducing wrinkles and lines on the face — formed around the eyes, mouth and forehead when you frown, smile and squint. Lines may become less and less visible after each treatment as the muscles become less prominent, and you’re not just smoothening out already-formed lines but preventing new ones from appearing. It’s non-surgical, reliable and efficient.

Botulinum toxin can also be used to slim the face and lift and define the jawline, as well as on the neck to reduce vertical neck bands. In some places, you can even have diluted doses of botulinum toxin placed superficially just under the skin to reduce oiliness. You could also use it in the underarm area to reduce excessive sweating and in the forehead to help with chronic migraines.

What Are The Side Effects & Risks Of Botox?

While not very common, you may see reddening, swelling and minor bruising around the injection site.
A headache and flu-like symptoms for the first 24 hours
Administering too much botulinum toxin might result in a “frozen” or expressionless face, asymmetrical issues and even the drooping of the eyelids and eyebrows. Botox is temporary, so any of these issues will wear off.
Very rarely, serious problems like blurred or double vision (if injected around the eyes) or breathing difficulties (if injected in the neck area) can happen.

When administered by a fully-trained physician, botulinum toxin can produce consistent, natural and predictable results. We all have different muscle strengths and placements so the treatment should be as personalised as possible. We can’t emphasise enough how important it is to consult a doctor you can trust. Concentration and dosage make all the difference. We’d highly suggest reading the Department of Health’s informational page on cosmetic procedures and referring to its list of registered medical practitioners.

What To Expect When You Get Botox In Hong Kong

Botulinum toxin injections are a nonsurgical, in-office treatment that requires minimal preparation. Your face will be cleaned and an anaesthetic numbing cream may be applied. The botulinum toxin will be injected into muscles using a very fine needle. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes and typically takes two or three days to begin seeing the effect.

While it requires no downtime, it’s best to avoid alcohol and vigorous exercise for 24 hours, massaging and rubbing the face for about three days and facials for about two weeks. Your practitioner should give you more detailed advice.

What To Know & Consider Before You Get Botox In Hong Kong

If you’re thinking about having botulinum toxin injections, it’s important to be super clear about why you want them. For example, you may achieve similar effects with skincare products and facial treatments. All procedures have some risks and if you’re disappointed with the outcome, this could impact your emotional well-being. We’d suggest giving this informational page a read.
Do not get botulinum toxin injections if you have a skin infection, are unwell in any way, have a neuromuscular condition, and if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding. It’s also a great idea to consider all medication you take — for example, antidepressants and antihistamines do not compromise Botox treatments but aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may.
It’s not permanent — the effect will usually only last for three to four months (although it can last longer!)
A single session is sufficient to see results. You may wait a few days to see an initial effect and it may take a week or two to be fully visible but that one session will be more than enough.
Prices really vary in Hong Kong. While we’d ordinarily look to more affordable options, be wary of cheaper clinics that aren’t reputable and well-reviewed, it’s not worth it to take the risk — this is your face and body!
Make sure the person doing your injections is qualified and experienced. Skip salons and go directly to a Hong Kong-registered doctor. Review before-and-after photos to check their previous work and look for independent reviews online.
Schedule an initial consultation where you can express your needs and cosmetic desires to your practitioner. Make sure you’re comfortable with your doctor, and that their philosophy aligns with yours.
Ask your practitioner about their training, qualifications and experience; the name of the product, its license and where it’s made; risks and side-effects; and what will happen if things go wrong.
Clarify any previous dosages, which brands you’ve used before and are using now, then work out which will be most suitable for your skin. Make sure to also let your practitioner know your medical history, any allergies and all medical conditions.
Be wary of clinics that pressure you to purchase a higher injection dosage.

How It Works

When asked for the lower body area I would like to focus on, I originally chose inner thighs which are notoriously hard to tone, but after their Operations Director Pauline (and expert therapist) performed an assessment, she recommended targeting cellulite instead. It was useful to have her input and it made sense that this would be a better area in terms of visibility to see how effective Zionic Rollactive RF is in targeting cellulite (or stubborn fat, uneven skin and poor elasticity depending on your area of concern).

The Experience

After slathering conduction lotion on the back of my thighs, Pauline put the machine to work, one leg at a time. The treatment itself feels like a warm, relaxing massage, the machine’s rotating balls creating an even, comforting rhythm. The temperature gradually increases to reach a maximum of 43 degrees celsius (aka the fat-burning sweet spot) before she switches to the other leg, at a slow enough pace that the build-up is manageable. She noticed slight inflammation behind the back of my knees which she tended to with the machine for added lymphatic drainage to boost circulation.

Immediate Impressions

Following the treatment, I noticed that the appearance of cellulite and its orange-peel look were diminished and that the treated area looked smoother overall, and dare I say tighter (thanks to increased collagen and elastin). Due to the warmth of the machine, the back of my legs had a post-workout rosy flush, perhaps due to the lymphatic system being activated which improved hydration — and my confidence.

No Downtime Required

The treatment was quick, painless and completely safe, as the temperature never reaches a point of posing any risk to the skin or tissue (as evidenced by clinical studies). No special post-treatment care is required, and Pauline sent me on my merry way with no lifestyle changes needed immediately after.

For Best Results

As with most body contouring treatments, combining this with movement and a healthy diet offer the best long term results. Pauline suggested at least eight of these 30-40 minute treatments once a week to see the best results.
