With t-minus four days until the Oscars, awards season is nearing its official end, and last weekend’s glut of awards announcements—with the Motion Picture Sound Editors (MPSE), Cinema Audio Society (CAS), American Cinema Editors (ACE) and Writers Guild of America (WGA) all announcing their winners—brings us ever closer to the light at the end of the tunnel.

The best-known among the awards quartet, the WGA Awards named Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris the year’s Best Original Screenplay, while the award for Best Adapted Screenplay was given to Alexander Payne, Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s The Descendants. The latter film also won the USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the year’s best literary adaptation and was announced—yep—last weekend.

Though The Descendant’s WGA win is sure to get people buzzing in the run-up to the Oscars, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s any more likely to defeat fellow nominee The Artist in the Best Original Screenplay category, seeing as the Oscars juggernaut wasn’t eligible for a WGA Award in the first place. Michel Hazanavicius’s black and white silent picked up an award itself over the weekend, courtesy of the ACE’s Eddie Awards, which named it the year’s Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy or Musical). The award for Best Edited Feature Film (Drama), meanwhile, went to The Descendants.

Besides The Descendants, the only film to pick up multiple awards over the weekend was Martin Scorsese’s Hugo, which was recognized for its sound mixing at the CAS Awards in addition to picking up a win (Best Sound Editing: Music in a Feature Film) at the MPSE’s Golden Reel Awards.

A list of the film winners at this year’s Golden Reel Awards, WGA Awards and Eddie Awards are below. For more information—and to see the winners in non-film categories—visit mpse.org, www.wga.org and ace-filmeditors.org, respectively.
