Michael Bay’s Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen smashed records at the box office with a five-day total gross of $201.2 million. The sequel to 2007’s Transformers, starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, scored the best opening ever for a June release (its weekend numbers came in at $112 million) and finished with the second biggest five-day start ever, trailing the The Dark Knight‘s $203.8 million by only a few million.

In a very distant—but still strong—second place, The Proposal wooed the romantic movie-going audience with $18.5 million, bringing its two-week total to $69 million. The Hangover stumbled even closer to the $200 million mark with $17.2 million in third place (taking its gross to $183 million) and in fourth Up made it to $250 million with a weekend estimate of $13 million.

Rounding out the top five was My Sister’s Keeper, the new release from The Notebook director Nick Cassavetes, and starring Cameron Diaz and Abigail Breslin. The tearjerker, about a family dealing with a child stricken with cancer, made $12 million.

In other new releases, Chéri, the period comedy with Michelle Pfeiffer and Rupert Friend, made $408,000 at 76 sites and Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker averaged an impressive $36,000 per 4 sites for a total gross of $144,000.

Next week, Public Enemies, with Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Marion Cotillard tries to give Transformers a run for its money; for the kiddie set there’s Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs with Ray Romano and Queen Latifah; and Nia Vardalos writes and directs her latest romantic comedy, I Hate Valentine’s Day.
