If you’re looking for things to do in Shenzhen beyond queuing at Costco and splurging at the Park Hyatt, here are our favourite alternative ways to spend a weekend across the border…

These days, when Hong Kong seems quiet during the weekends, ‘Everyone must be in Shenzhen’ is the thought that instantly spring to mind. While you get more bang for your buck when it comes to dining, luxury stays and getting pampered at 24-hour spas, there’s more to the city than well-priced hedonistic pursuits.

Team Sassy scopes out unique Shenzhen sights to check out the next time you make the short sojourn. We’ve thrown a bit of everything into the mix — from history to art exhibits, coffees spots and local markets¸— just some of the reasons our neighbour is a hot-ticket destination.

We are fans of browsing the weekend markets, where you can snag local trinkets and handicrafts.

We really are spoiled for choice when it comes to direct flights from Hong Kong. And as much as we love our reliable holiday destinations like Phuket or Bali, sometimes it’s nice to take advantage of the Asian aviation hub and look for vacations that are less mainstream. Here are eight direct flight destinations to put on your radar!

We’re all set to make 2024 the year of travel! Let’s maximise our annual leave for extended vacation time or jet away for a quick weekend getaway. Whether you crave basking in the sun on a beach, launching yourself headfirst into the hustle and bustle of an Asian metropolis, or eating your weight in street food, there’s an exciting adventure on the horizon.

Editor’s Note: Flight schedules from Hong Kong are constantly changing. Please check directly with carriers for the most up-to-date routes and schedules.

direct flight Kaohsiung

Kaohsiung, Taiwan

Taipei might be the obvious choice for a weekend in Taiwan, so mix it up a little by visiting the harbourside city of Kaohsiung. Spend your day exploring the city by bicycle (there are over 950km of bike paths!) before eating your fill of street food with the locals at the bustling night markets. And if you’ve had a run of misfortune, be sure to include the twin Dragon and Tiger Pagodas on your sightseeing list — it’s said that entering through the mouth of the dragon and exiting the tiger can reverse your fortunes!

Airlines: There are multiple daily direct flights on Hong Kong Express and Cathay Pacific to Kaohsiung.
Flight Time: 1.5 hours

direct flight Okinawa

Okinawa, Japan

You might associate Japan with bustling megacities or winter ski trips, but don’t dismiss the beaches and unique characteristics of this archipelago nation! In Okinawa prefecture, the scenery is stunning, with brilliant blue waters, pristine beaches and lush forests full of endemic flora and fauna. History buffs will also enjoy learning about the distinct cultural differences in the southern isles — the 400-year-old Ryukyu Kingdom was independent until 1879 and you can spend your days touring World Heritage-listed ancient castles. With 160 islands to explore, this is one beachside destination you’ll want to visit again and again.

Sassy Tip: Keep your eyes out for the resumption of direct flights to Ishigaki, also located in Okinawa Prefecture and a gateway to world-class scuba diving.

Airlines: Hong Kong Airlines offers daily flights to Okinawa and HK Express flies three times a week.
Flight Time: 2 hours and 35 minutes

direct flight Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, Thailand

If you’re looking to escape the Bangkok bustle and experience the history-steeped charms of Thailand, this northern city is calling your name. Situated within a mountainous landscape, Chiang Mai offers an alternative to the typical tourist circuit. Wander the quaint streets and get lost in the mystical allure of the 13th-century — Chiang Mai is a hub with an arts and food scene that’ll leave your senses buzzing. Savour northern Thai specialties, get your bargain on at the bustling night markets, and prepare to have your heart stolen by the rescued elephants at one of the city’s ethical sanctuaries. Because let’s be real — watching these gentle giants roam freely will be the highlight of your trip!

Airlines: There are daily direct flights on Hong Kong Express, as well as frequent flights on AirAsia to Chiang Mai.
Flight Time: 2 hours and 55 minutes

direct flight Phnom Penh

Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Often overlooked as travellers make a beeline to the temples of Angkor Wat, Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh offers travellers a gritty view into Cambodian history and culture. The Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda are hard to miss as you explore the riverfront, but it’s telling that two of the city’s other big tourist attractions make for quite sombre visits. The Killing Fields of Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum certainly give travellers a wake-up call to Cambodia’s very recent history. Once you’ve acknowledged the tragic past, you can marvel at the leaps and bounds this young nation has made in the past 4o years. There’s an emerging foodie scene and arts scene, as well as bustling markets and nightlife. Be sure to visit a rooftop bar at sunset to watch day turn to night over the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers.

Airlines: Cathay Pacific currently flies daily direct to Phnom Penh.
Flight Time: 2 hours and 40 minutes

direct flight Penang

Penang, Malaysia

Penang is one of those destinations that just keeps us coming back for more! Thanks to its rich history as a trading hub, there’s a unique fusion of Malay, Chinese, Indian and European heritage that comes through everywhere you turn. Explore the streets of George Town to see the unrivalled collection of UNESCO-listed, pre-WWII shophouses, many of which have been lovingly restored into boutique guesthouses, restaurants, cafes and museums. You won’t have to look far to find iconic street art, with murals adorning many of the walls throughout the city. The beauty of Penang is that you can combine your culture and foodie adventure with some time lazing on the golden sand beaches of Batu Ferringhi.

Airlines: Cathay Pacific and AirAsia fly direct to Penang almost daily.
Flight Time: 3 hours and 45 minutes

direct flight Chengdu

Chengdu, China

Chengdu is the total package, offering a mix of natural landscapes, wildlife encounters, and some of the most delicious cuisine on the planet. Yep, we’re talking about Sichuan hotpots and the iconic mapo tofu. But Chengdu isn’t just a foodie’s paradise; it’s also the only place where you can get up close and personal with China’s pandas at the city’s panda preserves and breeding centres. Frankly, watching those fluffy bamboo-munchers is the stuff dreams are made of! And when you need a break from all the panda pandemonium, simply head out to Jiuzhaigou, one of China’s most stunning national parks, for some serious mountain-hiking magic.

Airlines: Sichuan Airlines has daily direct flights to Chengdu.
Flight Time: 2 hours and 30 minutes

Kathmandu, Nepal

Access to the Himalayan Kingdom got a whole lot easier when direct flights from Hong Kong resumed. Visit ancient temples and stupas in the city, or better yet, get out into the countryside for some guided trekking through the mountains and villages. Keen adventure travellers will no doubt want to hit the mountain trails by hiking Annapurna or up to the Everest Base Camp.

Airlines: Cathay Pacific currently flies direct to Kathmandu fives times a week (Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Saturday).
Flight Time: 5 hours

direct flight Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia

Dive into the capital of Mongolia, where the country’s storied past collides head-on with a modern energy, creating an experience unlike any other. Wander the streets and you’ll encounter a contrast — fashionistas strutting in the latest designer items brushing shoulders with nomadic herders, while the soaring, 40-meter statue of Genghis Khan towers overhead. However, beneath the surface lies a cultural richness, best explored at the newly opened Chinggis Khaan Museum, which delves into Mongolia’s 2,000-year history. Whether you’re marvelling at Tibetan thangka paintings or simply getting lost in the vibrancy of daily life, Ulaanbaatar will leave a lasting mark.

Airlines: Mongolian Airlines operates direct flights to Ulanbaatar daily.
Flight Time: 4 hours and 4o minutes

Before you embark on your journey to Singapore, we’re here to share all the best local tips to ensure you uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Hong Kongers might like to throw a little shade at our neighbour in South East Asia, but we all know that it’s just a friendly rivalry! When you land in the sleek cityscape, you’ll soon learn that there’s more to this modern metropolis than meets the eye – it’s where the ordinary is made extraordinary.

Naturally you’ll want to take in the sights — Marina Bay Sands, Gardens by the Bay, Universal Studios and the Singapore Zoo, but to truly feel the pulse of the city it’s well worth digging a little deeper. Plus, Singapore Airlines needs little introduction about its world-class service – keep scrolling for all the details on discounted tickets!

Read More: 11 Unique Hotels To Book In Asia In 2024

1Start Your Journey On The Right Foot With Singapore Airlines

Singapore Airlines is known for placing its passengers’ needs and making travel a stress-free experience. From check-in to arrival, the journey is made smoother, easier and more enjoyable – thanks to award-winning cabin products, renowned hospitality from cabin crew, and even free wifi onboard

Plus, its flexible schedule of six daily flights and knowledgeable staff all make this a reliable airline (one of the youngest fleet in the world that too!).

2Savour Street Food At Chinatown Hawker Centres

The best way to get a true sense of Singaporean culture is to do as the locals do, starting with food! Embark on a culinary adventure as you stroll the streets of Chinatown.

Dive into the vibrant street food scene, savouring the iconic Hainanese Chicken Rice, or indulge in the savoury delight of Char Kway Teow. Of course, you won’t want to miss out on the crispy and flavourful Singaporean Chili Crab, a gastronomic masterpiece that captures the essence of this dynamic city’s diverse culinary landscape.

With three popular hawker centres in close proximity to each other (Chinatown Complex Food Centre, Amoy Street Food Centre, and Maxwell Food Centre), you’ll be spoilt for choice with all the affordable food in Chinatown!

Sassy Tip: The Chinatown Complex Food Centre is the largest food hall in the city with over 200 stalls! Get there early to ensure your pick of the plates — many stalls close for the day once they’ve run out of food.

3Explore Instagrammable Heritage Shophouses In Joo Chiat

One of Singapore’s best hidden gems, Joo Chiat earned the title of Singapore’s first “heritage town” in 2011, and is a wonderful representation of Singapore’s aim to preserve the old while promoting all that is new.

Joo Chiat’s most famous block is home to a cluster of pastel heritage shophouses decorated with super pretty Peranakan tiles along Koon Seng Road. To truly experience Joo Chiat’s charm, take a leisurely stroll around the blocks or join one of the local walking tours!

4Take In The Vibrancy Of Cultural Districts Little India And Kampong Gelam

More than just a district steeped in history, Little India is a feast for the senses, where tradition meets novel experiences. One of Singapore’s most colourful neighbourhoods invites you to indulge in its vibrant offerings of Indian food, street art, temples and shopping at Tekka Centre and Mustafa

Speaking of bustling streets, Kampong Gelam, one of Singapore’s oldest neighbourhoods, is a must-visit destination where modernity meets tradition. Immerse yourself in Kampong Gelam’s rich history with Sultan Mosque (a national monument), street art inspiration with Gelam Gallery, local-inspired delicacies and shop along Arab Street and Haji Lane. Also, stick around until nightfall and Kampong Gelam takes on a whole new life, with live music bars and hip restaurants at Haji Lane.

Sassy Tips: Little India gets very crowded on Sundays and during the festive period, to the point where it can be overwhelming even to habitual visitors. Multiple visits might be needed to fully experience Little India, but with year-round activities, there’s always something new to discover.

5Unveil Changi Airport’s Magic At Every Terminal

Typically airports aren’t much more than a necessary transit point on your journey to somewhere much, much more exciting. Not so in Singapore!

At Changi Airport, your layover transcends the ordinary, so much so that you’ll want to extend your stay to make the time for its unparalleled experiences. You’ll already be familiar with the now iconic Rain Vortex, the world’s tallest waterfall that has to be seen to be believed, but there are more mesmerising spectacles to be found in every terminal.

Terminal 2: Immersive Dreamscape &  The Wonderfall

In Terminal 2 you’ll find the digital masterpiece The Wonderfall, plus the completely immersive Dreamscape and Enchanted Gardens. Snap a photo in front of the nostalgic Flap Pix and then pull up a chair in the TV lounge.

Terminal 3: Free Movie Screening

Over in T3 you can pass the time by catching the latest blockbusters on the big screen (for free!) then take a stroll through the Butterfly Garden.

Aerotel in Terminal 1: Rooftop Pool Bar

Don’t forget to pack your swimsuits. At Aerotel in Terminal 1 there’s a rooftop swimming pool and bar with skyline views.

If that’s not enough, you can always dive into some retail therapy with 550 outlets, from high-end luxury to vibrant new outlets. There’s no doubt, Changi Airport is not just a stopover; it’s an indulgent destination to schedule before your extraordinary journey continues.

Sassy Tip: For more tips on getting the most out of your airport experience, check out Now Boarding, the travel blog by Changi Airport.

6Seize The Sale & Book Discount Airfare On Singapore Airlines!

Mark your diaries, the sale starts now to Wednesday, 13 March, 2024.

Singapore is not just a destination; it’s a realm where the familiar transcends into a holiday of wonder and fascination. Get ready to immerse yourself in the extraordinary tapestry of this city, where the extraordinary is just another facet of daily life.

This is Sri Lanka’s only privately-owned island, and boasts a neo-palladian mansion that promises to cater to your every need. What’s more, this romantic island villa is only accessible by wading through the sea on an elephant, unless, of course, you’d fancy a swim.

Our top beachside destinations make for a perfect quick weekend getaway — in less than four hours, you could be kicking back on a golden-sand beach.

As long as you plan ahead, cheap flights should be available, saving on cost and on the number of annual leave days you have to take! It’s time to fish out your passport and start planning a short trip to one of our favourite beach getaways.

Sassy Tip: Visit from June to October to catch the annual Fulong International Sand Sculpture Arts Festival.

Da Nang has long topped our holiday lists. So much so that it was the first holiday this Team Sassy member booked post-pandemic! After an affordable, two-hour direct flight you can be sitting beachside, relaxing with a cocktail in hand or exploring the lantern-lined lanes of historic Hoi An. Not to mention munching on the fresh fragrant flavours Vietnamese cuisine is famous for.

So let’s just say it was a happy coincidence that we could spend a day checking out TIA Wellness Resort to sample the amazing prize on offer in the current Sassy giveaway.

TIA Wellness Resort

Just a short drive from Da Nang International Airport, we arrive at TIA Wellness Resort and are immediately struck by the boutique look and feel of the all-villa property. The lobby and main restaurant have a chic, modern Vietnamese design that flows through the picturesque gardens leading to the beachside infinity pool.

Despite its photogenic position by the sand, the pool is surprisingly quiet thanks to each villa having a private pool (more on that later!). We took full advantage, diving straight in! Likewise, we were able to lap it up, relaxing in the crystal clear waters of the South China Sea.

Breathwork, Yoga And Wellness Activities At TIA Wellness Resort

A unique concept, TIA Wellness Resort offers complimentary wellness classes for all guests. It offers daily breathwork, Tai Chi, yoga and creative workshops.

Hosted in a bright and airy studio within the spa sanctuary, the breathwork class was held to the meditative sounds of the waterfall, palm trees moving in the breeze and the melodic hum of the cicadas and birds. As we were all beginners, the instructor guided us through the basics, easing us into relaxation for the day ahead.

The session I was most curious about, if not a little sceptical about (if I’m being honest) was the creative workshop. Colouring with my kids aside, neither my husband nor I are the most artistic people. We went in with an open mind (and perhaps a few jokes about our creative capabilities). The workshop was surprisingly relaxing, as we were guided through colour choices to match our feelings and given a variety of mediums to work with.

No, I will not be showing you my masterpiece. But, in a turn that could only be described as fate, the session concluded with my husband and I revealing our very, VERY similar works of art. I’m going to assume it’s because we are soulmates so in tune with each other’s feelings rather than the sheer coincidence of a shared beachside view out the window (we both created ocean waves and sunsets in case you were wondering!).

Included Spa Treatments At TIA Wellness Resort

We couldn’t visit an all-inclusive resort without sampling the spa menu. Every guest has access to up to two spa treatments (to a maximum of 80 minutes) every day from a treatment menu with a variety of both 50-minute and 30-minute options.

Our session started with a private visit to the new and modern spa facilities. There are DIY scrubs to choose from, one of the most hypnotic steam rooms I’ve ever seen (the colour-changing lights on the ceiling were a lovely touch), a sauna overlooking the lush tropical garden, plus a shower room with a rain shower, Vichy shower bed and massage jets. Our 30 minutes was up all too quickly but set us up well for our treatments ahead.

We were led through to our couples’ room full of natural light. We both chose a 50-minute body massage (Himalayan salt stone for me and deep-tissue sports massage for him), followed by a 30-minute head and shoulder massage. Our experienced therapists knew exactly what they were doing and there’s a good chance one of us may have nodded off.

Wellness Cuisine

A huge part of visiting Vietnam is the food. Personally, I’d start every day with a cà phê sữa dá (Vietnamese iced coffee) if I could! As a health and wellness resort, I was curious to see the menu offerings. TIA Wellness Resort caters for all diets, from those on a full cleanse to those looking to indulge.

I was struck by the diversity of what was on offer at the breakfast buffet. There were vegan options and healthy wellness options (fresh spring rolls, chia puddings, protein balls and more) for those keeping it light. On the flip side, the traditional holiday treats — eggs, bacon, croissants and pastries were also available. Plus an al a carte option and made-to-order Vietnamese and barista coffees. Everything was delicious!

We also sampled the vegan lunch options at The Ocean Bistro. The poolside restaurant had a breezy, coastal feel to it and dished up innovative plant-based plates.

Private Pool Villas At TIA Wellness Resort

While we didn’t spend the night at TIA, we were treated to a sneak peek at its stunning private pool villas. No wonder the beachside pool was quiet — the villas are your own little sanctuary! With sleek and spacious interiors coupled with your own plunge pool, there’s little reason to leave. Well, except for those spa and wellness treatments!

Plus, if you miss the breakfast buffet you can order from the in-room dining menu at any time or snack from the included wellness-inspired mini bar.

Final thoughts on TIA Wellness Resort, Da Nang

Having visited Da Nang (and Vietnam in general) many times over the last decade or so I can safely say this is a property I’ll be coming back to. I particularly love that it caters for all wellness interests and mixed abilities. If you are someone looking to dive into cleanses, detox and daily yoga there are programmes available. At the same time if your travel companion is more interested in cocktails by the pool and a good massage they won’t be disappointed either.

I may already be planning a solo retreat for my next long weekend!

After the rollercoaster ride that was 2022, who would say no to a stay at The Farm at San Benito?

Imagining a weekend of relaxing by the pool, maybe a yoga class and massage in a lovely resort in the Philippines, I was quick to say yes to a quick trip to The Farm at San Benito. A bit of time out to set the tone for the new year ahead. Without wanting to sound too dramatic about it, The Farm at San Benito was so much more…

I love a spot of yoga and will never say no to a good spa treatment. However, when it comes to crystals and chakras, juice detoxes and vegan living, I’m a bit more sceptical. But I’ll try anything once! The beauty of a stay at The Farm at San Benito is there is something for everyone’s interpretation of wellness. There are options for those seeking a complete lifestyle overhaul and those who want a simple holiday retreat with healthy food, relaxation and mindfulness and fitness.

What is The Farm at San Benito?

More than just a lovely tropical resort (although it is definitely that too!), The Farm is a complete holistic lifestyle destination. There are onsite yoga, fitness and wellness classes and a luxurious spa, as well as a holistic medical centre all just a 90-minute drive from Manila International Airport. Easy reach for a quick getaway from Hong Kong.

Wellness At The Holistic Sanctuary

What sets this destination apart is the Holistic Sanctuary, a medical centre that offers everything from general consultations, nutritional advice and digestive cleanses supervised by a team of onsite doctors to physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture and reiki, psychology and psychoemotional healing. There are programmes and packages covering all sorts of health issues including long Covid recovery, sleep induction, stress reduction and hormonal balance.

The options can seem quite overwhelming, but at the heart of each package is a personalised, medically supervised treatment plan. The helpful team will guide you through the options and help build your perfect retreat.

Tested Treatments At The Holistic Sanctuary

My treatments started with the Live Blood Analysis which involved a finger prick blood droplet being examined under a microscope. While not diagnostic, it was interesting to see the blood cells interact giving insight and direction to other health conversations.

This was followed by a Voice Analysis where I spoke into a microphone for around a minute, followed by the doctor’s interpretation of my personality, mental and physical health. I still have no idea how it works, but the results were scarily accurate and some of the personality traits (both positive and negative) definitely struck close to home. Like the Blood Analysis, the results help form a broader picture of your health and areas for improvement.

Finally, I spent some time in the Vital Dome infra-red sauna. A strange experience as you lie down, in a dimly lit room with peaceful music playing, covered by the dome with just your head out. On the “detox” setting, the heat went up to 65º C, sending my heart racing and letting my body sweat out the toxins. I’m still trying to decide whether it felt like a relaxing meditation or an intense workout. Yes, very conflicting concepts, but I would absolutely do it again

Healing Sanctuary Spa And Aqua Sanctuary

No retreat would be complete without a visit (or two or three!) to the spa and the Healing Sanctuary and Aqua Sanctuary did not disappoint. I tried the signature Purification Treatment which was a simply divine combination body scrub and massage.

Next up was Aqua Therapy, a two-hour onsen-like experience. The time was spent being guided from the saunas and steam rooms through different water jets and onsen pools, before finishing up with an infrared foot sauna and shoulder massage. It was relaxing and meditative and something I’d highly recommend.

Given The Farm at San Benito is a holistic resort, there is also a focus on the body and mind. A yoga session overlooking the lake was the perfect start to the day and there were also guided nature walks, fitness classes and meditation sessions at various times each day.

Restaurants At The Farm at San Benito

Everyone knows that a key to good health is eating well. ALIVE! serves up delicious vegan meals (and if you are doing a cleanse this is where all your meals will likely be). I also really enjoyed the meals at PRANA, the Indian-inspired vegetarian restaurant and also PESCE which, as the name suggests, serves up seafood by the pool.

Accommodation At The Farm at San Benito

There is a range of rooms, suites and villas to suit your style. My room was a Banaba Deluxe in the newest section of the resort. It was lovely and comfortable and I really enjoyed waking up to the sounds and views of the forest. It is near a new section of the resort that is being constructed (with exciting things to come!) and a bit of a walk to the main areas so if I were to stay again I’d look into the villas which enjoy a private garden and some with their own pools.
