Amy Schumer reveals the joke she “wasn’t allowed” to tell at the Oscars; an abundance of Brian Tyree Henry; the trailer for Marcel The Shell With Shoes On, which is perhaps the most heartwarming movie trailer you will ever see in your life. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.
But First: Finestkind is the name of a new Paramount+ movie that will begin shooting at an actual Massachusetts fishing port later this month. The stellar cast includes Ben Foster, Toby Wallace, Tommy Lee, and Jenna Ortega, and here’s the description from The Hollywood Reporter: “The crime pic centers on two brothers, played by Foster and Wallace, who are from opposite sides of the tracks and reunite as adults over one fateful summer. When they strike a deal with a dangerous Boston crime syndicate, a young woman (Ortega) finds herself caught in the middle, which puts bonds between brothers, friends, and a son and father, played by Jones, to the test.”
Hooray for Massachusetts Fishing: Between this and Best Picture winner CODA — about a Gloucester, Mass. fishing family — is Massachusetts fishing having a moment?
Concordia Fellows: Concordia Studio, the executive producers behind Oscar-winning documentary Summer Of Soul, have announced this year’s winners of The Concordia Fellowship. They’ll receive financial support to make their next project, as well as mentorship, guidance, and professional resources. Congratulations to this year’s winners: Giselle Bailey, Alice Gu, Shalini Kantayya, and Christine Turner.
Luthier: We’re especially big fans of Gu, whose documentary The Donut King, about Cambodian-American donut impresario Ted Ngoy, premiered at SXSW in 2020 and later aired on PBS’s Independent Lens. Her latest film, Really Good Rejects, just premiered at the latest SXSW and focuses on Los Angeles luthier, or guitar maker, Reuben Cox. Here’s a clip:
Brian Tyree Henry: The Atlanta star is back on the series for its new third season, which is back four years after Atlanta Season 2. Since 2018, Henry has amassed more than two-dozen credits, including in Eternals, Joker, Godzilla vs. Kong and the upcoming Bullet Train. He talks with us about traveling so much for work that he hasn’t been to his home in New York in years. “’Where’s home?’ is the question I’ve been asking myself for the past 20-something years. That is something that I’m really working on right now, as we speak,” he told MovieMaker.
Shotgun Wedding Heads to Prime Video: The new Jennifer Lopez and Josh Duhamel action-rom-com that I can’t wait to see is going to Amazon Prime Video, where it is expected to receive a limited theatrical release in addition to streaming, according to Deadline. No release date yet, but I’ll be keeping my eyes peeled because I love a good rom-com with guns. You may recall that at one point Armie Hammer was going to star in this, but then, well, you know.
If You Love Irish Folklore: As much as I do, you will likely enjoy this interview I did with the extremely talented Irish director Kate Dolan. It’s about her feature directorial debut You Are Not My Mother, which is a horror movie, yes, but I have a very weak stomach for horror movies and I slept fine after watching it. Head over to the story to hear all about the Fae, changelings, and more spooky Irish lore. You Are Not My Mother is now in theaters.
Amy Schumer Live: In her first live appearance since co-hosting the Oscars, Amy Schumer performed for a packed crowd at Las Vegas’ Mirage Theater and shared her thoughts on The Slap, as well as telling some Oscar jokes she said she “wasn’t allowed to say.” The Hollywood Reporter recounted that she said Will Smith smacking Chris Rock “was a fucking bummer” and the result of “toxic masculinity.” Amy Schumer then added: “I think the best way to comfort ourselves would be for me to say the Oscar jokes that I wasn’t allowed to say on TV.”
Yow: “Don’t Look Up is the name of a movie,” went one of Amy Schumer’s jokes. “More like, don’t look down the barrel of Alec Baldwin’s shotgun.”
Dust Off Your Beret: We’re going to France. Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic starring Austin Butler, Olivia DeJonge, and Tom Hanks is officially set to make its world premiere at Cannes, according to THR. I’ve never actually attended the festival, but I did visit Cannes while it was happening once during a study abroad trip in college. We all stood as close to the red carpet as we could just for a chance to see Blake Lively and Aishwarya Rai walk by. It was life-changing.
This Is Heartwarming: The trailer for the first feature-length Marcel The Shell With Shoes On movie is out from A24, and I must say, Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp have really outdone themselves. The pair have made three short films about Marcel The Shell, starting in 2011, as well as two children’s books, and now, Fleischer-Camp is directing and Slate is lending her voice to the beloved character in this feature about a little shell who is looking for her family.
