I Didn’t See You There, a documentary by Reid Davenport in which he attached a camera to his wheelchair to chronicle his feelings about the raising of a circus tent near his Oakland, California apartment, won the Grand Jury Award at the 25th annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in Durham, North Carolina over the weekend.
I Didn’t See You There previously won the Directing Award: U.S. Documentary at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was described as “an unflinching meditation on freakdom, (in)visibility, and the pursuit of individual agency.”
Full Frame‘s Grand Jury, consisting of Jessica Beshir, Luke Lorentzen, and Michèle Stephenson, said in a statement that the film “delivers a profoundly moving experience with astonishing vulnerability and a visionary creative voice.”
Full Frame’s Honorable Mention was presented to Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes, directed by James Jones.
“Through deeply impactful storytelling and use of rare archival footage, Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes carries a gut punch that continues to reverberate in our minds and hearts. We are elated to extend the Honorable Mention to Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes,” the Grand Jury said.
The Full Frame Jury Award for Best Short went to “The Silent Shore,” directed by Nathalie Giraud and Timothée Corteggiani.
The Charles E. Guggenheim Emerging Artist Award, which honors a first-time documentary feature director, went to Jannis Lenz for Soldat Ahmet.
The John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute Award, for a short film that highlights documentary as a “formally inventive artistic medium,” was presented to “Abyssal,” directed by Alejandro Alonso.
Duke University is the presenting sponsor of Full Frame, and representatives of the President’s Office of Duke juried the prize for the Full Frame President’s Award, given to the best student film. This year’s winner was “No Soy Óscar,” directed by Jon Ayon.
Aftershock, directed Paula Eiselt and Tonya Lewis Lee, received the Kathleen Bryan Edwards Award for Human Rights.
The annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival gathers thousands of enthusiastic fans around the world celebrate “the documentary art form, engage in meaningful conversation, and experience the impact of exceptional nonfiction cinema firsthand.”
The 25th Annual Full Frame Documentary Film Festival took place from Thursday through Sunday.
