Squid Game Barry Season 3
Squid Game Renewed; Lightyear Banned; Hader on Barry Finale

Squid Game is returning and writer/director/producer Hwang Dong-hyuk teases what to expect in Season 2; a kiss will prevent Lightyear from opening in these two middle eastern countries; Bill Hader talks about the Barry Season 3 finale. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.

But First: Jurassic World: Dominion may have bad reviews (its currently sitting with a paltry 30 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) but that hasn’t dissuaded audiences from heading to the theaters in droves to catch the last film in the new dino trilogy. IndieWire box office analyst Tom Brueggemann believes it could be the first film to hit $1 billion since 2019.

Hader Talks Barry Finale: The Season 3 finale of Bill Hader and Alec Berg’s hitman comedy Barry aired last night and co-creator/star Hader spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the finale, which he calls “disturbing.” I just finished the Season 2 finale so I’ll be holding off on this feature for now. But I’m sure if you are caught up that you will also want to check out The Ringer‘s Prestige TV podcast where Sean Fennessey has been recapping every Season 3 episode with Hader himself. Below is one glorious minute of Barry Season 3 that I have seen:

Sam Mendes Wins Another Tony: The Tony Awards were last night and The Lehman Trilogy took home five awards including best play and best direction for Sam Mendes — who also has two previous Tony Awards, as well as an Oscar for American Beauty. I caught The Lehman Trilogy during its Los Angeles run at the Ahmanson Theatre and was blown away by its scope, performances and stage design. These awards are well-deserved for Mendes and company. Variety has the full list of Tony Awards winners.

John Waters at The Academy: Next month, an exhibit honoring moviemaker provocateur John Waters will open at the Academy Museum in Los Angeles. The New York Times took a tour of his cluttered home, hunting for artifacts from the self-professed “hoarder.” On his audience, Waters reflects, “My audience was not just gay or straight; it was bikers, or it was all people that didn’t fit in; even in their own minorities they had trouble, and there was my target audience.”

Lightyear Banned: “Infinity and beyond” does not include Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, now that those two middle eastern countries have banned the release of Disney Pixar’s Lightyear due to the film’s inclusion of a same sex kiss. This scene “was originally cut from the film, but reinstated following the uproar surrounding a statement from Pixar employees claiming that Disney had been censoring ‘overtly gay affection'” The Hollywood Reporter says. The animated film opens in theaters this Friday following Top Gun: Maverick and Jurassic World: Dominion, indicating that the summer blockbuster season is now in full swing.

Squid Game Will Return: In a move that surprised no one, Squid Game has been officially renewed for a second season, Deadline reports. Season 1 was Netflix’s biggest hit ever. “With 1.65 billion views in its first 28 days of release. Squid Game currently holds the record for Netflix’s most watched series — English-language or non-English-language — by a wide margin,” Deadline adds. Squid Game writer/director/producer Hwang Dong-hyuk teased the renewal with some clues about what to expect in the upcoming season: “And now, Gi-hun returns. The Front Man returns. Season 2 is coming. The man in the suit with ddakji might be back. You also will be introduced to Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su.”
