People are mad that Tim Allen isn’t voicing his Toy Story character in the new Lightyear movie; Austin Butler can’t stop doing the Elvis voice; The teaser trailers for Harry Styles’ My Policeman and Kid Cudi’s Entergalactic are here. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.
But First: Today is the start of the Provincetown Film Festival, which we highly recommend checking out. It will include a conversation between Luca Guadagnino and the festival’s resident artist, John Waters, as well as awards for Dale Dickey, Jenny Slate and Bowen Yang. The film’s include the Sundance darlings Cha Cha Real Smooth and Emily the Criminal, as well as the world premiere of the excellent new darkly comic drag-queen romance Chrissy Judy.
Top Gun: Maverick Reigns Supreme: Over Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the highest-grossing film of the year. According to Variety, the Tom Cruise flick has now gone past $400 million at the box office — and it’s only the second pandemic movie to hit that milestone after Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Persuasion Evasion: Fans of Succession star Sarah Snook expressed their frustration with the new Netflix adaptation of Jane Austen’s Persuasion starring Dakota Johnson on Tuesday. Besides taking issue with certain stylistic elements of the Netflix trailer, they vowed not to watch the Johnson version in solidarity with Snook, whose Searchlight adaptation of Persuasion was shelved last year. Entergalactic: Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Kenya Barris have teamed up on an animated television event that will premiere on Sept. 30 on Netflix. It’s called Entergalactic, and it follows the story of two young artists navigating love in New York City. Mescudi will voice the main character, Jabari. Directed by Fletcher Moules, the voice cast of Entergalactic also includes Timothée Chalamet, Jessica Williams, Ty Dolla $ign, Laura Harrier, Vanessa Hudgens, Jaden Smith, Arturo Castro, and Macaulay Culkin. Buzz Lightyear Bedlam: Fans of original Toy Story voice actor Tim Allen are ticked off that Chris Evans was cast as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in the character’s upcoming origin story movie Lightyear instead of him. Those fans include Everybody Loves Raymond star Patricia Heaton, who tweeted on Tuesday: “The reason the character became so beloved is because of what @ofctimallen created.”
The Argument: Some people are arguing that Disney ousted Allen because he’s pro-Trump. But Lightyear director Angus Maclane told The Hollywood Reporter his reasoning: “Buzz was a side character in Toy Story and was a little goofier and a little more of a comedic relief. For Buzz to be a main character he needed a little more gravitas, a little more vulnerability, needed to be funny but not in a goofy way that would undercut the drama. Chris embodied all of those things.”
Someone Help Austin Butler: The man can’t stop talking like Elvis. After two years of preparing for the role of the King in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis drama, he told ET that the Southern twang just feels like his regular voice now. “At this point, I keep asking people, ‘Is this my voice?’” he said. “It’s one of those things where certain things trigger it and other times as well it’s, I don’t know. When you live with something for two years, and you do nothing else, I think that you can’t help it. It becomes a fiber of your being.”
My Policeman: Harry Styles stars as a closeted policeman in late 1950s England in My Policeman, a new Amazon Prime Video film co-starring David Dawson, Emma Corrin, and Gina McKee. I’ve seen it and I have to say, it was a beautiful movie. I highly recommend it, whether you’re a Harry Styles fan or not. It’ll hit theaters on Oct. 21 and Prime Video on Nov. 4.
