Luca Guadagnino equates sex scenes and drinking tea at the Provincetown International Film Festival; a brand new trailer for Stranger Things is here ahead of Volume 2’s July 1 release; Bradley Cooper recalls how Hollywood responded to A Star is Born‘s eight Oscar nominations. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.
But First: Pixar’s Lightyear has underperformed at the box office with an opening weekend gross of only $50 million against a $70 million projection. (Some insiders will tell you that studios have been underestimating projections of late so that they can tout an over-performance.) Variety looks at why Lightyear performed so poorly. “Disney spent the last two years putting Pixar movies — Soul and Turning Red among them — directly on Disney+, which may have inadvertently conditioned people to expect to see the animation studio’s newest releases at home,” Variety says.
Provincetown Winners: The Provincetown International Film Festival ended Sunday and we’ve got the full report on the winners, which include Good Luck to You, Leo Grande and also Dale Dickey for her performance in A Love Song.
Luca on Sex Scenes: Also at Provincetown, the Call Me by your Name and Suspiria director Luca Guadagnino shared a conversation with provocateur John Waters. There Guadagnino professed his love for filming sex scenes: “My motto is that shooting a sex scene is as equal as shooting a scene in which someone drinks a cup of tea. I don’t see the difference. It’s acting.”
Bradley Cooper Mocked: Smartless podcast hosts Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett welcomed actor-director Bradley Cooper onto their show for a very candid conversation in which Cooper recalled how some Hollywood legends mocked him over the eight Oscar nominations for his 2018 film A Star is Born, which he directed, produced and starred in opposite Lady Gaga. The film’s solo Oscar win went to Gaga for best original song. One incident left Cooper thinking, “Bro, why are you such an asshole?” You can listen to the full podcast below:
Reverse, Reverse: There is a new title for the Yellowstone prequel, which has Helen Mirren and Harrison Ford set to star. Taking a trip back a full decade back, it is now titled 1923 instead of 1932, Variety reports.
Mr. Bean on Cancel Culture: The Irish Times has an interview with Rowan “Mr. Bean” Atkinson, who says the concept of “punching up,” or as he calls it, “kicking up,” is complete nonsense: “You’ve always got to kick up? Really? What if there’s someone extremely smug, arrogant, aggressive, self-satisfied, who happens to be below in society? They’re not all in houses of parliament or in monarchies,” he says. “There are lots of extremely smug and self-satisfied people in what would be deemed lower down in society, who also deserve to be pulled up. In a proper free society, you should be allowed to make jokes about absolutely anything.”
Stranger Things Volume 2: July 1 is when many, many people will stream the second half of Season 4 of Stranger Things. This morning, a new trailer for Volume 2 dropped. Watch below:
