Cooper: Where Are You?! is all about: all the attempts — and failures — to identify the guy behind the sunglasses who hijacked a plane in 1971 and parachuted away with $200,000, never to be seen again. Peter Dinklage Joins Hunger Games Prequel: With all the news about House of the Dragon, the Lord of the Rings prequel series, and the potential Harry Potter series, my eyes took a minute to adjust when I read this casting announcement for Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. At first, I was like, huh, that’s a weird name for a GOT spinoff. Then I unscrambled my brain. And indeed, Mr. Dinklage has joined the cast of the Hunger Games prequel film as Casca Highbottom, dean of the Academy, according to Deadline’s exclusive. The movie is coming out next November, so maybe this is a reason for me to finally read the Hunger Games books.
My Two Cents: All of this content is great and all, but Hollywood Powers That Be, I am once again asking you to let a good thing die. Just let one tiny piece of beloved IP go to its grave in peace. Is that too much to ask? Obviously, it is.
A New Music Video Dictor Has Hit the Scene: And his name is Steven Spielberg. The Jaws and E.T. director was asked to dip his toe in the music video waters by none other than Marus Mumford of Mumford and Sons. Steven Spielberg made the whole video for Mumford’s new single “Cannibal” off of his upcoming solo-record “(Self-Titled)” in one shot on his phone, Mumford said in a tweet. Plus, Mumford’s wife, A Promising Young Woman star Carey Mulligan, was in charge of costumes and sound. Love that for them! Watch the video below:
More Joe Berlinger, Please: One of my favorite true-crime documentarians is going back to crime dramas! Berlinger is behind docs like Paradise Lost, Brother’s Keeper, Murder Among the Mormons, Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich, and all of the Conversations With a Killer and Crime Scene series on Netflix. He’s also behind the Ted Bundy drama Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile, and now he’s remaking an American version of the Swedish crime drama The Truth Will Out with Endemol Shine North America, according to Deadline‘s exclusive. It’s about a detective with a history of mental illness and who leads a unit of “misfit officers” who are tasked with solving cold cases. I’m looking forward to seeing this one.
Can I Geek Out For a Sec?: I am quite an intense consumer of true-crime docuseries — I’m lucky that my job here at MovieMaker overlaps with one of my favorite pastimes — and my other favorite true-crime documentarian is Skye Borgman. She’s been on fire lately, and I bet there are tons of people who have watched a bunch of her docuseries and don’t realize that she’s behind all of them. She made Netflix’s Abducted in Plain Sight, Hulu’s Dead Asleep, and Netflix’s Girl in the Picture, which was recently in the Top 10. And now she’s about to premiere another Netflix docuseries called I Just Killed My Dad on Aug. 9, and I’m so excited to watch it because everything I’ve seen of hers is fantastic. Anyway, I’m a big fan of Borgman. That is all. Carry on.
Brett Goldstein’s Marvel Moment: The Ted Lasso actor told Variety‘s Marc Malkin about sending his parents to see Thor: Love and Thunder without telling them he makes a brief appearance as Hercules in a post-credit scene. Goldstein also said he truly does not know whether he’ll ever play Hercules again or if it was a one-time thing, but it’s pretty cool either way.
The Idol Teaser: HBO released the first teaser for a new series starring Lily-Rose Depp and Abel Tesfaye, A.K.A. pop singer The Weekend. The Idol is very sex, drugs, and rock and roll, Euphoria meets Blow vibes. It’s from Sam Levinson, the creator of Euphoria, of course, and Depp’s dad Johnny was in Blow, so this feels like the perfect combination. It’s already super buzzworthy and I’m sure the buzz will only grow. Watch the teaser for The Idol below:
