Who’s who on the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, Donnie Brasco co-stars Johnny Depp and Al Pacino team up for a century-old story, Diane Keaton has a body switch movie, and Quentin Tarantino’s fiery Indiana Jones rankings. All in today’s Rundown.
But First: One thing that will help our completely independent, film-obsessed small business is if you’d sign up for our YouTube channel. We would be grateful.
Quentin Tarantino: Thinks Temple of Doom is the best Indiana Jones movie and Last Crusade is the worst. Yes, he’s including Crystal Skull in there. He didn’t list Raiders of the Lost Ark, but through process of elimination you can put it at No. 2 on his list. (Yes, I know — I’m just the messenger.)
House of the Dragon: With Better Call Saul ending tonight — we love you, Saul! — perhaps you, like me, need a new destination TV show. My hopes lie with the Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, coming this weekend. If you’re worried that you’ll be totally lost from the very beginning, you’re not alone — so we’ve compiled this who’s who in Old Westeros.
You Know Who’s Extremely Underrated? Tamra Davis. She directed the first films to star Adam Sandler and Chris Rock and Dave Chappelle and Britney Spears. Now she’s back with Netflix’s 13: The Musical, and to share some comedy war stories with Josh Encinias.
Diane Keaton Made a Body Switch Movie: And here’s director Katie Aselton to explain how that happened.
Depp + Pacino: Johnny Depp and Al Pacino are making a movie together again, 25 years after the crime classic Donnie Brasco. This time Depp directs and Pacino produces (onomatopoeia!) Modi, about tragic Italian painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani, a contemporary of Pablo Picasso’s. The last film Depp directed was The Brave, in 1997 — the same year Donnie Brasco came out.
Brasco: Has my all-time favorite movie plot — someone goes undercover and begins to sympathize with the people they’ve infiltrated. I’ll always watch that movie, whether they call it Donnie Brasco or Mean Girls or White Chicks.
We’ll Leave You With This: Did you know that Guillermo del Toro has a cabinet of curiosities? He does, and he’s opening it for us all with the upcoming Netflix series Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities. Have you noticed that when people say “curiosities” it’s always a polite, understated way of saying “horribly upsetting things”? It’s like “novelties” that way. Just be upfront. If you have a house of dragons, just say it’s a house of dragons, not curiosities, because some naive person is going to get quite literally burned. Anyhoo here’s the trailer:
