Ana de Armas had a “very mystical” feeling playing Marilyn Monroe in Blonde; Colin Farrell says “good chatter” can heal us; Glass Onion brings Knives Out to the beach; a small House of the Dragon mistake. Plus: Actual Facts is a brand-new podcast we proudly endorse. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.
‘Very Mystical’: Ana de Armas strongly felt the presence of Marilyn Monroe while playing her in Blonde — especially during scenes shot in Monroe’s home, on the anniversary of her death. “I think she was approving what we were doing,” de Armas said at a Q&A about the film today at the Venice Film Festival. “Maybe this sounds very mystical, or something but it was true. We felt it.” Here’s Caleb Hammond in Venice with more from the Q&A, which also included Blonde director Andrew Dominik and actor Adrien Brody.
Sun’s Out, Guns Out: Here’s the new trailer for Glass Onion, a Knives Out Mystery, and my completely uninformed guess at who the killer very obviously is.
Colin Farrell on ‘Good Chatter’: The Banshees of Inisherin star believes good chatter can save us all. “To have conversation, to exchange ideas in a way that is as open to your opinion being changed as it is to your opinion being shared — that’s a gorgeous thing.” Here’s Caleb, our man in Venice, with more.
Actual Facts Podcast: Looking for a new podcast? Check out my friends Eric Steuer and Jason Betrue’s new Actual Facts, where they use recent documentaries to talk about storytelling, personal obsessions, and the way we live today. The new episode is about Biana Stigter’s new documentary Three Minutes: A Lengthening, which is built around three minutes of recovered footage of a Jewish community wiped out by Nazis. “It’s a truly remarkable thing to make something that is visually interesting that is 70 minutes long that is only comprised of three minutes of source material,” Eric notes. You can listen on Apple or Spotify or below, and please subscribe? It helps.
Fairy Godmother: Networking is good, but even better is finding a “fairy godmother” in Hollywood. Here’s “Huella” director Gabriela Ortega recalling how she found hers, UnbeliEVAble Entertainment executive Sandra Condito, through NewFilmmakers Los Angeles.
Five-Finger Discount: Sharp-eyed House of the Dragon fans noticed that in one scene in the (stupendous) third episode, King Viserys (Paddy Considine), who is missing two fingers, has his two supposed-to-be fingers wrapped in green. The plan was to digitally remove them later, which someone forgot to do. Look, VFX houses are very backed up right now, as COVID-delayed projects roar back online, so let’s all remember to give VFX folks some grace and place the blame squarely where it belongs: Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. Anyway, THR reports that the error will be fixed soon so watch fast if you want to laugh at King Fingerhaver.
Not the green screen glove on Viserys’s missing fingers 🤣🤦🏻♀️#hotd pic.twitter.com/4CLUw5tDhI

P.S. There will be no Rundown tomorrow because I’ll be en route to the Indie Street Film Festival. Come say watch some great films and say hi if you’re near Red Bank, New Jersey!
