Netflix’s Killer Sally docuseries director believes that bodybuilder Sally McNeil shot her husband in self-defense; Jennifer Lawrence leaves Adam McKay’s Elizabeth Holmes feature Bad Blood; Aubrey Plaza joins the Marvel Cinematic Universe. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.
Killer Sally: If you like true crime, I’ve got an amazing recommendation for you — Netflix’s Killer Sally docuseries. Director Nanette Burstein tells the fascinating story of how bodybuilder and wrestler Sally McNeil shot and killed Ray McNeil, her bodybuilder husband, on Valentine’s Day in 1995. Burstein told me that she believes Sally, who says she shot Ray in self-defense.
Harry Styles ‘Chose Himself’: to play a closeted gay policeman living in 1950s England in My Policeman, according to director Michael Grandage. He told me that he hadn’t even had a chance to send Styles the script before Styles’ people reached out and said he was interested in the role. “Harry Styles kind of chose himself,” Grandage said. “We hadn’t actually sent him a script, but the script had been distributed within his agency, and they knew what he was looking for in material. So they read this script and thought, This is actually the kind of thing he’s looking for.”
Aubrey Plaza Joins MCU: Our summer cover star has been cast in the WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Cover of Chaos with Kathryn Hahn. The casting was first reported by The Illuminerdi and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter. Plaza previously starred in the X-Men adjacent FX series Legion before Disney took over Fox and brought the X-Men IP into the MCU’s portfolio. Read more here.
Ryan Coogler Loves Terminator 2: So much so that he recently told Collider that Terminator 2: Judgment Day was a big inspiration for his antagonist character Namor the Sub-Mariner in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. “Terminator 2 is a big inspiration for this movie,” he said. “Big time. And you think about what T-1000 wants, and what Arnold Schwarzenegger’s robot wants. They both want John Connor, but T-1000 wants to kill him, Arnold Schwarzenegger’s character wants to protect him. That’s the movie. And I look at it like that and also try to spend time with them. Not too much, you know what I’m saying? But enough that you understand where they’re coming from and that you believe them when they make threats.”
Jennifer Lawrence Says Bye Bye: to Bad Blood, Adam McKay’s feature about Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes. Jennifer Lawrence was going to produce and play Holmes, but once she saw Amanda Seyfried’s performance as Holmes in The Dropout, she decided to back out. “I thought she was terrific,” Jennifer Lawrence told The New York Times‘ Kyle Buchanan. “I was like, ‘Yeah, we don’t need to redo that.’ She did it.”
Daniel Radcliffe Explains: Why he felt it was necessary to publish that open letter on the Trevor Project website speaking out against J.K. Rowling’s anti-trans remarks back in 2020. “Particularly since finishing Potter, I’ve met so many queer and trans kids and young people who had a huge amount of identification with Potter on that. And so seeing them hurt on that day I was like, I wanted them to know that not everybody in the franchise felt that way. And that was really important,” Radcliffe told IndieWire on Tuesday. Having worked with the Trevor Project for over a decade, he added, “I would’ve been able to look myself in the mirror had I not said anything.”
Speaking of Which: Mariana Varela and Fabiola Valentin — Miss Argentina 2020 and Miss Puerto Rico 2020 — revealed earlier this week that they secretly got married and are now publicly sharing their love story. There isn’t a movie about them yet, but my God, there really should be.
