The one and only D-O double G is getting his very own biopic. I’m talking about Snoop Dogg — and the 51-year-old “The One and Only” rapper is producing the project for Universal Pictures.
In case you were wondering, this biopic represents the perfect marriage of creative partners for Snoop, with Allen Hughes (The Book of Eli) signed on to direct and Ryan Coogler’s Black Panther co-writer Joe Robert Cole penning the script. Hughes and Sara Ramaker also produce alongside Snoop.
“It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni,” Snoop said in a statement, according to Deadline.
“I waited a long time to put this project together because I wanted to choose the right director, the perfect writer, and the greatest movie company I could partner with that could understand the legacy that I’m trying to portray on screen, and the memory I’m trying to leave behind,” Snoop said. “It was the perfect marriage. It was holy matrimony, not holy macaroni.”
The biopic will cover Snoop Dogg’s eventful life in the spotlight and include music from his long catalog, marking the first project made under his new Death Row Pictures banner.
Snoop Dogg was born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr. and has at times gone by other names, including Snoop Doggy Dogg and Snoop Lion.
The music and entertainment mogul got his start featuring on Dr. Dre’s debut single “Deep Cover” and also on Dr. Dre’s debut record “The Chronic”. Since his own debut 1993 album “Doggystyle,” Snoop Dogg has had a very successful solo career with songs like “Drop It Like It’s Hot” and “Sensual Seduction.” He’s also a very successful businessman — you can find Snoop’s face on wine bottles in most grocery stores since he partnered with Australian wine brand 19 Crimes to make “Snoop Cali Red.”
Snoop is also known for his friendship with Martha Stewart, who wrote the forward in Snoop’s 2018 cookbook From Crook to Cook: Platinum Recipes from Tha Boss Dogg’s Kitchen. Co-authored by Ryan Ford, the cookbook is full of perfect munchies to eat while high, from fried bologna sandwiches to baked mac ‘n cheese.
“Snoop Dogg’s life and legacy make him one of the most exciting and influential icons in popular culture,” said Universal chairman Donna Langley. “We met with Snoop shortly after he acquired Death Row Records and had the opportunity to hear his story in his own words. We are humbled to be able to create the lasting document of this singular artist.”
