A third installment in the Princess Diaries franchise is on the horizon at Disney.
Reacher and Supergirl screenwriter Aadrita Mukerji is currently writing the script for Princess Diaries 3, according to The Hollywood Reporter, which adds that it’s going to be a continuation of the existing storyline rather than a reboot of the original.
Star Anne Hathaway, who made her feature film debut in 2001 as Mia Thermopolis in the first Princess Diaries movie, does not have a deal to return yet, but she recently told ET that she was really rooting for the third movie to be greenlit.
“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” Hathaway said in October. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”
Garry Marshall, who directed the first two Princess Diaries films, died in 2016. No word yet on who will direct the third installment — but according to THR, original producer Debra Martin Chase is returning to produce the third film. Melissa Stack (The Other Woman) will executive produce.

The first Princess Diaries movie followed Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, a teenage girl living in San Francisco with her mother and dealing with the usual gamut of high school problems — having a crush on the most popular boy in school, Josh Bryant (Erik Von Detten) while simultaneously being bullied by the popular girl, Lana Thomas (Mandy Moore). Her best friend is Lilly Moscowitz (Heather Matarazzo). But when Mia suddenly gets contacted by her estranged grandmother (Julie Andrews), she realizes that her late father had kept an important secret from her — that she’s actually the heir to the throne of a small European country called Genovia. Finding out she’s a princess wasn’t one of Mia’s plans for that school year, and she resists her sudden royal responsibilities — at least at first. She falls in love with Genovia soon enough, even if it’s not the life she imagined for herself.
Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement again stars Hathaway, this time opposite Chris Pine as the handsome suitor who comes to court her in the made-up country of Genovia.
Let’s hope that all the original cast members all return for Princess Diaries 3!
