Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, a 1975 film about a woman who has sex with clients in the afternoon to support herself and her son, was named the greatest film of all time in the new once-a-decade Sight and Sound poll. It replaced Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo, which in 2012 displaced Citizen Kane as the greatest film on the list, a position it had held since the poll originated in 1952.
Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, or Jeanne Dielman, as it is more commonly known, was directed by Chantal Akerman when she was just 25, and was 35th on the list in 2012. Since then, the number of participants polled has more than doubled, and diversified. But the arrival of Jeanne Dielman was still a surprise, at least for many American film fans. The film was not even released in the United States until 1983.

Akerman, who died in 2015, is the first woman to be honored with having her film at No. 1 in the poll. The film premiered to a positive reception at the Cannes Film Festival in 1975, and did well financially, but has obviously grown in esteem since. Over three hours and 18 minutes, it follows Jeanne Dielman (Delphine Seyrig) over three days as she carries out her household chores, prepares three dinners, and has sex with three clients. It contains – spoiler alert — one killing.

Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw was among the first to react to the decision — with praise. “At last,” he wrote. “a shake-up, a crack in the wall, a challenge to the canon, a change to the same old list-making business of reshuffling the same old names in a slightly different order at the top.” He praised Jeanne Dielman as an
“eerily unsettling and mesmeric three-hour-plus account of a single mother’s apparently banal life in real-time long takes, which progressively disclose an awful secret.”
At the time of the film’s U.S. release in 1983, the New York Times critic Vincent Canby said it was “not difficult to understand the extraordinary underground reputation of this lengthy… very beautiful Belgian film, made in 1975 and starring Delphine Seyrig, a screen presense comparable, perhaps, only to Garbo. Miss Seyrig has participated in a number of supposedly experimental films over the years, but in none as original and ambitious as this.”
In 2015, the Times’ Manohla Dargis called the film “radical in its form and politics,” noting that Akerman was “better known in academia and on the festival circuit than in the art house.” She added that Akerman “gave an old-fashioned women’s picture an avant-garde makeover to create a slow-boiling masterpiece in which time never flies — it scarcely even budges.”
