Jeanne Dielman is the new best film of all time, according to a prestigious critics poll; the new Indiana Jones trailer leans into Indy’s age; where to read dynamic, wild news, throwbacky new scripts this weekend. All in today’s Movie News Rundown.
The Greatest Movie Ever Made? If you read our weekly newsletter yesterday, you already know that Sight and Sound has released its once-a-decade critics poll of the greatest films ever made — and Vertigo is no longer at No. 1. (It bumped Citizen Kane from the top spot in 2012 for the first time since the list began in 1952.) The new greatest film ever made is Jeanne Dielman, 23 quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles. The film, which runs more than three hours and was directed by Chantal Akerman when she was just 25, and was 35th on the list in 2012. It follows Jeanne Dielman (Delphine Seyrig) over three days as she carries out her household chores, prepares three dinners, and has sex with three clients.
Ah Yes: Remember when you first saw Jeanne Dielman? I don’t, because I am among many people who had never heard of it until yesterday. So props to the Sight and Sound critics on a very bold choice. I bet a lot of us will be watching it in the coming weeks. Several great films also joined the list for the first time, including Barry Jenkins’ 2016 Moonlight, Jordan Peele’s 2017 Get Out, Bong Joon Ho’s Parasite, Céline Sciamma’s 2019 Portrait of a Lady on Fire. Here’s the full list.
May I Editorialize? I was surprised to see the list includes zero films by Steven Spielberg or Quentin Tarantino.
Enter the Radness: Speaking of lists, want to read bold, daring, incredibly original scripts? Our friends at The Stunt List have just released their first-ever year end showcase. It features both The Stunt List — 50 writing samples that will likely never get made because of IP rights issues, but are fun reads and writing samples — and The Originals Bureau, 60 market-ready scripts. It’s a delightfully weird, genre-infused, often retro answer to The Black List, of which we’re also big fans. You can have a lot of fun clicking through Orignals Bureau page ones, pitch decks, proofs of concept, and full scripts for a limited 30-day run for most of the projects. All
scripts on The Stunt List are instantly viewable. Want to be on the list next year? You can learn more here.
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny: Look, I’m as skeptical as anyone about the need for another Indiana Jones movie, given that Harrison Ford is 80, but darned if this trailer didn’t get me amped up for the final film in the series. It wisely leans into Indy’s age, treating it as just one more comical inconvenience as he whips through a new impossible adventure. Here are some thoughts on it, and here’s the trailer:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Trailer: Between Indiana Jones 5 and the very indy inspired Guardians of the Galaxy, next summer is going to be fun at the movies. In addition to the Dial of Destiny trailer, yesterday we also got a new Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 trailer, full of laughter and charm. Here it is:
